Pump Up The Stam With V Magazine's Eighties-Inspired Editorial

    image
Lisanne Silverman on Aug 31, 2009 12:24 PM PDT
Jessica Stam stars in an awesomely eighties-inspired spread in this month's V Magazine, on newsstands tomorrow. The editorial showcases Stam working out in some of fall's hottest looks, with an equally hot trainer, because everyone knows you should never stretch in a Balmain jumpsuit alone. You could pull a thread, or possibly a muscle. Other exercise ensembles include a Marc Jacobs sweater and boots, Adidas by Stella McCartney leggings layered with Chanel leg warmers, and a pair of seriously fierce Louis Vuitton over-the-knee boots that will scare off anyone who may be inclined to steal your spot on the elliptical machine. We're not sure whether we're more motivated to shop or sweat after a peek at the photoshoot, but we'll be getting in our cardio somehow, that's for sure. See the slideshow for a preview of the spread, and be sure to pick up this month's issue of V magazine tomorrow!

Nifty Nautical Finds For Vintage Fashionistas

    image
Mary Kincaid on Jul 10, 2009 8:17 AM PDT
You may remember from elementary school history that Magellan was the first person to circumnavigate the globe and it was quite the feat. He started his voyage with 280 men and five ships on September 1519 and arrived back in port almost three years later with only one ship and 18 crew members remaining. But does anyone know the name of the first woman to circumnavigate the globe? That distinction belongs to Krystyna Chojnowska-Liskiewicz, who completed her journey in 1976 in only 401 days. Oh, and she did it solo! Of course, not all of us have the drive for adventure and the bravery required for such daring-do. But if you don't see a personal yacht in your future, don't despair. You can still embrace the spirit of sailing with these nifty nautical finds. Just click the slideshow to see the selection!

Talitha Getty's Style Lives On Through Boho-Inspired Pieces

    image

The adage "live fast, die young" applies to few people quite as well as it does Talitha Getty. A victim of her own excessive lifestyle, the Dutch-descended Getty died in 1971 at age 30 of a drug overdose, yet left behind a style legacy that's become a cultural touchstone: designers as disparate as Marc Jacobs, Gucci, Michael Kors, and Christian Dior are among the many who've cited Getty's signature Marrakesh-meets-mod fashions as inspiration for various collections. Gamine, almond-eyed, and possessed of a confident style that drew on the twin influences of the Moroccan souks she frequented and the London-based Swinging '60s crowd she ran with, Getty was immortalized in Patrick Lichfield's iconic photograph of her and husband John Paul Getty, Jr., on the rooftop of their infamous home in Morocco dubbed "The Pleasure Palace." The image captured not just the beautifully tragic air that surrounded the Gettys, but also Talitha's groundbreaking boho-chic aesthetic. Flowing caftans, mounds of costume jewelry, fur-trimmed mod dresses, filmy silk scarves, and gauzy harem pants were some of the hallmarks of her repertoire but, more than that, it was her laissez-faire, creative approach to blending style genres that prompted designers like Yves Saint Laurent to declare, "When I knew Talitha Getty my vision completely changed." Getty's seemingly direct fashion descendants include Jade Jagger, Nicole Richie, and Kelly Killoren Bensimon, the latter having proclaimed her admiration of Getty openly. Talitha Getty's casual-elegant style is perfect for the coming summer months, and I've put together a slideshow to show you how to achieve it-- check it out.

Kick Around In A Pair Of Loafers This Summer

    image

The fail-safe shoes known as the loafers haven't changed much over the past 10 years. They are simple, masculine and may be great for warmer weather, but these classic shoes are appropriate for year-round use. Loafers are one of the most effortless pieces of footwear a man can have in his wardrobe. I mean, all you have to do is slip them on and go. It can't get any easier than that. I am proud of my sole pair of Ferragamo loafers. In fact, they are one of my most coveted items in my closet. I keep them in a fireproof safe in there. They are uncomplicated, black and are beautifully constructed (what pair of Italian shoes aren't?). If Ferragamo isn't your cup of tea, go for the classicism of Gucci horse-bit loafers or the modernized Johnston & Murphy tassle loafer. But if you're one of those guys who want your feet to get attention, opt for the blue Cole Haan penny loafers or the zest of Ted Baker's Aglio loafers. Need something a little more flashy, yet subtle? Bottega Veneta has some basket woven kicks for you. Then there is the whole issue on whether to go sock-less when wearing loafers. There's no crime in showing some ankle, but if you're like me and have an irrational fear of going nude below the ankles, Banana Republic has the perfect remedy: no-show loafer socks. Here are some other loafer ideas to kick around.
