Hot In The Hive: DEFY Bags

    image
Ida Hsiang on Nov 20, 2009 6:25 AM PST
So everywhere you go these days, people are making an effort to "go green", from light bulbs to cars to clothing. Anything that helps out Mother Earth, I'm for it! That's why when I spotted these DEFY Bags, I had to check them out. Not only are their bags unique and completely cool, but they also make a statement -- political, social commentary, or just random observations of art and culture in an eye-catching and slightly retro design. And it's not just the way the bags look that make DEFY Bags so hot, it's the fact that they also have a 'go green' attitude. These messenger bags are perfect to carry around pretty much anything you'll need throughout the day and each one is truly individual because artists hand create the picture on the front from old billboard signs. Don't see a picture that expresses the true you? You can design your own flap! Another cool thing to check for after you find the bag that shows your personality the most? Look inside and see just what kind of message the original billboard was selling! Edgy, personal and made of recycled goods, DEFY Bags are worth more than a second glance!

    Price: Small: $115.00 - Medium: $120.00 - Large: $125.00

Live In Green Luxury In Chicago's Emerald Condos

It IS easy being green! At least at Emerald it is. These twin towers of eco-friendly condos on the east edge of Chicago'ss hot, hot, hot West Loop neighborhood offer a calm, relaxing retreat in the middle of the urban jungle. Decorated in a variety of natural greens and recycled materials, the lobby (with 2-story glass atrium), bar/lounge and boardroom are conscious common areas just steps from Restaurant Row, Greektown, The Loop and the financial district. Each unit has a private balcony -- many with picturesque skyline views -- as another way to bring nature inside. And with an appropriate address on Green Street, Emerald lives up to its gem status in luxury environmentally responsible living.

Got Cashmere? Check Out Leroy & Perry, A Barney's Green ...

If you're like me you could swaddle yourself in cashmere at just about any time, especially now that the fall chill is working its way in. Lutz & Patmos may be some of the best cashmere and sweaters out there! The highly coveted knitwear line who has collaborated with the likes of Coach, VW and Uniqlo and has had guest celebrity designers like Kirsten Dunst, Liv Tyler and Carine Roitfeld has done it again with their Leroy & Perry line. The eco-friendly collection created exclusively for Barney's Green not only looks great, but gives back too. A percentage of the proceeds go to the Alliance for Climate Protection, an organization whose goal is to provide comprehensive solutions for the climate crisis. The organic cotton sweaters are soft and perfect for layering, but my favorite has to be the vest made out of %100 recycled t-shirts. Get them now at Barney's Co-Op stores and online at barneys.com!

Next Big Thing: Salvadoran Designer Eugenio Menjívar's ...

You'll never look at an egg carton the same way, at least not if designer Eugenio Menjívar has anything to say about it! I met the 28-year-old "eco-experimental" designer at last week's International Contemporary Furniture Fair in New York City. And of all the designers showing some truly amazing (and expensive) stuff, Eugenio's ingenious use of the simple egg carton, along with scrap metal salvaged in his home of San Salvador, was the best example I saw of true design melded with our new knowledge that we must conserve our resources now, before it's too late. Click READ MORE for my interview with Eugenio, and SEE SLIDESHOW for more pics from his rECOlector CH07 collection.
