Vintage Fashionistas Savor Gray This Season!

    image

When searching for vintage clothing online, it's important that you use the right keywords to find what you want. And heaven forbid you're looking for something gray, because well, there's gray (the American spelling) and then there's grey (the British spelling). Of course, since vintage clothing sellers on both sides of the pond spell this color both ways without any sensible rhyme or reason, the wise online vintage shopper knows to plug both spellings into their search engines. If you do, you'll be rewarded with a smorgasbord of vintage treats in this classic, conservative neutral. Try substituting darker charcoal shades of gray for black. Or choose pale shades of gray to take the place of white. Morning, noon or night, for dresses, coats or evening gowns, gray is a fabulous wardrobe choice for a vintage fashionista. Tone Down The Shimmer This Season With Matte Grey Makeup Shades

Say so long to pearlescent gunmetal and chromed-out silvers -- matte grey is the hot beauty shade for the chilly season ahead! Matte nails have already taken the beauty world by storm, but now other makeup products are following in hot pursuit! From soft stone gray to rich chalky charcoal, there's something about matte grey that gives the face an unexpected warmer look than the more common frosty silver shades. While I've noticed that grey shadow seems to bring the best out of green peepers, it's hard to find someone who can't pull off a dark slate eyeliner in place of your basic black. Plus, mattifying your lids leaves room for shimmer elsewhere (ie: cheeks or lips) and helps ensure a balance so that your face doesn't end up looking like a shiny disco ball! Watch the slideshow for a series of grey shades to consider adding to your cosmetics collection!

Head For Neutral Territory: Earthy Looks For Men

    image

I have a philosophy that men should have a solid assortment of neutral-colored pieces in their wardrobe-- and when I say neutral, I am not just referring to black. I am referring to the earthy prismatic rainbow that includes gray, khaki, brown, navy and, of course, the good ol' standby, black. Choosing neutral pieces is like picking a canvas for you to paint on. When choosing something like a Ralph Lauren poplin barrel shirt, think of a pop of color that would compliment it (I'll go over choosing fun colors later). The best thing about neutral colored clothing is that it goes with just about everything, which makes it anything but boring. You can even go with neutral accessories that stand in the background of your colorful garb. A khaki Kenneth Cole messenger bag is a universal accessory as is the neutral colorblock tie by Thomas Pink. The trick about neutrals is to have a balance, because if you wear too much black, you run the risk of looking like an undertaker-- and no one wants that. Take a look at my slideshow for more neutrals to choose from.

New York Fashion Week Runway: Ralph Lauren Recalls A Cooly ...

Fall fashion in terms of Ralph Lauren is headed in a gloomy direction -- well, in terms of color. The collection left an icy after-taste, as the pieces extended themselves along a narrow span of black to white hues, many of them embossed with an illustrious and silvery palette no different than our own images of a Icelandic princess figure. However, lifeless colors like ash and beige were brought to life with Ralph Lauren's show at New York Fashion Week. The fabrics recalled a time associated with an empire run by Russian monarchs, including luxurious silk, lace, fur, and velvet textures. The time element was also hinted in Lauren's rendition of vintage elite with the use of bishop sleeves and coats embellished with eyelet-hook buttons. While it's difficult to do gowns in an unfeminine way, some dresses, and most separates, lacked a feminine quality, as they fearlessly drew attention to broad shoulders, mannish chests, and trousers unfitted in the waists. Interestingly enough, the glamour was brought back with Lauren's use of glittering accessories: elegant, strappy shoes, beautified belts, and exquisitely placed embroidered gems. The collection is sure to melt the ice-cold-chroma dominated collection with thick scarves, knit sweaters, sumptuous velvets and parka-like ponchos that screamed Eskimo empress.

Celebrity Style Steal: Amber's Smokin' Gunmetal Get-up

Amber Heard, a budding 22-year-old actress, is going to be in the anxiously awaited Pineapple Express. This bombshell blonde made the 2008 Maxim's Hot 100, so it's no surprise that she knows how to heat it up in the fashion world. She graced the cameras at the 2008 Comic Con International Sci-Fi/Entertainment Weekly Party in a grey strapless mini-dress, and fierce suede ankle boots. I am blown away by how gorgeous different shades of grey look together! It's very gunmetal-chic. To find sweet and sassy grey pieces like Amber's, view the SLIDESHOW!

Thumbing through the Aussie Stylediary pages, I noticed that a lot of really cute outfits were quite neutral in color. Down under, the palate may be very muted, but this international style screams posh as well as super feminine. Well, I don't know if it's because they're sick of bright colors from living in a perpetual summer, but throw some of those lovely beiges, greys, blacks, creams, taupes, and whites stateside! Check out seven Australian Stylediarists and their toned down pieces that would be sure to boost any wardrobe, in my slideshow!
