Pot Your Plants In Something Pretty!

    image
Amber Fijolek on июл 12, 2009 5:08 AM PDT
It's the little things that make a house a home. To make us happy, we put things we like in our homes -- like lighting, art and throw pillows. Plants are one of those home-warming articles that are essential. Having a bit of green in every room is a great way to keep some fresh energy flowing in from the outdoors. So if plants make us feel comfortable in our homes, why shouldn't our ferns and cacti feel comfortable in their homes? While the living, breathing creatures we keep in the picture window and on the coffee table don't voice their opposition to the plain, rust-colored clay pots, it's hard to not appreciate some prettier planter alternatives. Even better, a plant that's outgrown its living quarters is really just a great excuse find a replacement -- and perhaps even a new room motif to match! Especially now that your houseplants have the opportunity to see their wild, un-potted cousins of summer thrive outside through the windows, it's important to give the aloes and orchids of the inside a little love as to not feel jealous. Enjoy these slideshow picks for some fun accents to your green-filled abode!

Outdoor Furniture Your Garden Will Love!

    image
Anna Yu on июл 6, 2009 2:12 PM PDT
Now that the weather has finally warmed up, I've definitely been spending quality time outdoors. Whether it's working on my tan or barbecuing all day long, spending time in my backyard is fun and economical too because it's practically free! But if your backyard has more than its fair share of overgrown weeds and rickety furniture, then it's time to start mowing and make the most of the possibilities in a frequently unused space. Once you've a clean slate to work with, it's time to decorate with furniture and accessories. One of my dream gardens would definitely have a hammock where I can read a fun summer novel or nap the afternoon away. If you're a fan of design and a little bit of kitsch then take a look at the gnome tables by Philippe Starck for a bit of cheeky fun. For more garden furniture you'll want to live with forever, take a look at my slideshow!

Gardening is all the rage - thanks to Michelle Obama! And boy do we have some eco-friendly gardening treasures for you. We've always been fans of DIY gardening, long before it became popular (Wendy has the green thumb). These finds from our friends over at Etsy will help give your garden a new look, as well as stimulate the economy for our small independent businesses. Check out the handmade Plant Markers from ArtisanHands, or the retro Macrame Plant Hanger, by Plantelady for $35. And don't forget about your feathered friends when planning your garden. You will love the eco Reclaimed Glass Bird Feeder by RedYellowandBlueInk for $21. It is made from an upcycled street light. If you buy one, a $1 will go to the National Audubon Society. I love living in the city and would rather be nowhere else. The excitement, the variety, the convenience, the interesting and unique things around every corner. I love it all. The only thing I don't love about the city? The lack of green. You can find gourmet salad bars and veggie burgers piled high with leafy greens and fresh produce on any block, but you'd be hard pressed to find a lush yard in between apartment buildings or an overflow of trees and flowers on any given corner. Now, there is an easy and fun way to add the illusion of thick vegetation to your living environment! Thanks to CB2 and their Astro Balls, livening up your garden is no problem! They are made of high-quality polyethylene and look like giant Koosh balls made of grass! Their fun and unique shape add interest to any yard or lawn, regardless of size. They are not real grass so you can enjoy the look of green plants, but not have to worry about the care and maintenance that usually come with them. These CB2 Astro Balls are great for interior decoration too! Add a few into a large, glass vase, or set them individually in small bowls for a sophisticated look with a quirky edge. They come in light and darker green shades and at $3.95-$4.95 a piece, get a few and have fun decorating your urban area!

    Price: $3.95- $4.95

Mother's Day Gifts For The Mom With A Green Thumb!

    image
Pauline Montupet on май 1, 2009 10:20 AM PDT
Ever since I can remember, my mom has always had a green thumb (a trait that has unfortunately not been passed down considering I can't even keep a cactus alive). Whenever the weather is nice out, you can find her in the garden, picking weeds out of the flower beds, pruning the rose bushes and tending to the herb garden. This year for Mother's Day I'm going to get her something she can use in her beautiful little sanctuary, the garden. A new set of tools is perfect for any outdoor gardener; it's especially useful when it can be attached to a folding chair! Burt's Bees makes a great outdoor essential gift set that will let mom know you care about her out there in the wild. It comes with bug repellent, bite relief cream, a hand wash and a sun hat. Is Mom more of an inside gardener? Get her 12 months worth of seeds to grow herbs inside on the windowsill or a mini heirloom tomato growing kit. Need more ideas for Mother's Day? Check out the slideshow for some great gifts for the gardening mom!
