While calling Frida Kahlo a fashion icon wouldn’t be the most original statement — judging by major retrospectives, Salma Hayek’s movie, and the growth of a Kahlo “brand,” her outsiderness has a strong cachet — “Self-Portrait in a Velvet Dress” still surprises. There’s something about seeing her wardrobe on dress forms that immediately makes clear just how much her wardrobe informed her painting. But independent of that, Kahlo was a fine textile collector: her taste in fabrics can be seen as a map of her negotiations with identity — both her own and Mexican national identity.

March 21, 2005 - LOS ANGELES. Vibrant colors and a passionate intensity fed into Mexican artist Frida Kahlo's paintings. Indeed, the woman - her iconic style and art - motivated Louis Verdad's Fall/Winter '05 show . Referring to Kahlo in his program guide as "my inspiration, my Mexican treasure," Verdad flooded the runway with pinstriped suits, high-waisted pants and a collection of dressy coats and Oscar-worthy silk gowns. Kahlo herself once flirted with gendered ideals, donning both men's suits and Mexican skirts with similar relish. Stately models, including an intensely fierce Frida Kahlo look-alike named Morgan, wore bunches of roses in their hair, and braids twisted into complex chignons. Booming Mexican ballads, a fake parrot and a wreathed entry-way completed the show's celebratory Latin feel.
