Hot In The Hive: Flat Flower Vases

    image

I bet you're the type of person who gets lots of flowers delivered to you on a regular basis. Whether it's your significant other sending a dozen roses to celebrate your anniversary or your best friends delivering a birthday bouquet, your home always smells like a garden. So I can also understand why you've also run out of vases to store the beautiful flowers. I've seen makeshift vases from small mason jars, milk boxes, and even wine bottles. While those options may do its job, it certainly doesn't do the flowers (or the giver) any justice! Then again, it's not like we have tons of storage space for glass vases under the kitchen sink. Well, I've found a perfect solution and they're called Flat Flower Vases! These vinyl vases lie flat, but when you need to use them, just fill it up with water and you're ready to go.

Hot In The Hive: Vazu Foldable Vases

The forever-old custom of giving flowers as gifts would be a whole lot easier if you didn't have to worry about the glass vase not surviving the car ride over to the housewarming party you're attending. Vases usually aren't cheap, they break too easily, and they take up lots of precious storage room when you're too busy to keep them full of fresh-picked flowers. Apparently the masterminds behind the Vazu Foldable Vase had the same frustrations regarding flower-giving. The Vazu vase comes flat in its package and expands to form a sturdy, free-standing vase that you can fill with water and put on display with your flower arrangement. When you're finished, it re-folds easily back into its package for simple storage, and at only $4.99, you can afford to give it as part of a gift -- no broken glass and no lending out your grandma's old vase with the chance you'll never get it back! It even comes in a ton of colorful patterns that can coordinate with any bouquet arrangement. Check out the selection at the Vazu site!

Good Girl Gone Bad: 10 Floral Looks That Aren't Quite So Nice

    image
Lisanne Silverman on Jul 13, 2009 10:21 AM PDT
If you don't pay much attention to fashion, certain trends can appear confusing. That floral dress/leather jacket combo? Cute, but misleading. Sure, floral dresses are feminine and dainty, but leather jackets send forth an entirely different message, and so the untrained eye is left wondering just what was going through your head when you got dressed, which could be any of the following:

    a) You feel the need to wear elements that together create juxtaposition.
    b) You don't want to look too sweet or too tough, so you combine the two and look confused.
    c) You were cold.

Or maybe it's none of the above and I just completely over-analyzed the entire scenario (oops). But given that unexpected pairings are what make fashion so captivating, there's nothing wrong with sending a totally confusing, what-on-earth-is-she-wearing message from time to time, and with all of these embellished floral pieces I've been seeing, sending that message is easier and more stylish than ever-- think studs, zippers, chains, and buckles wreaking all sorts of havoc on the sweetest of florals. Rag & Bone's Spring/Summer 2009 collection said it best with a black leather/silk floral sheath dress that was equal parts feminine and fierce. Click on the slideshow for 10 more floral pieces that aren't interested in playing nice.

    Headbands Make Hair Happy!

I have low maintenance hair. This does not mean that my hair is amazing without me having to do too much to it. It means I don't do too much to it and just cross my fingers that it'll look decent for the day. I really admire people who get up an hour early to do their hair. They always look great. Personally, I'd rather sleep. The headband has been my friend throughout the years. I may not have time for the straightener, but a cute and practical headband always helps pull my look together and add a fun flair to my ensemble for the day. And it literally takes mere seconds! Headbands dropped off the radar for quite a few years and weren't seen except in the hair of devout headband lovers such as myself. Now, they're back with a vengeance! Headbands adorned with silk flowers or elegant crystals are popping back up everywhere! I've seen them have double and even triple straps and are showing up in funky, fun colors and gorgeous metallics! Add a sophisticated edge to your outfit or make a fashion statement! Easy to dress up with or dress down, headbands are practical, easy and now cuter than ever. Never really been the headband type of girl? Are you a little unsure about how to wear it? There are so many designs and variations to choose from, so check out some designs in the slideshow and find one that's right for you!

Hot In The Hive: Ballistic Rose From Citizen

    image
Ida Hsiang on May 5, 2009 6:25 AM PDT
There has always been something so alluring about paradoxical situations and the juxtapositions in life. What symbolizes beauty and romance better than a rose? Tobias Wong creates the Ballistic Rose out of a single piece of Ballistic Nylon, material used for military purposes. The black, rough material is so different from the fragrant, velvety feel of a real rose, but then, that's the appeal. This Ballistic Rose is in full bloom and lends commentary to the current somber issues in our world today. The Ballistic Rose by Tobias Wong is meant to remind us of the fragility and volatility of our world, but also of the beauty that can still be found in it. Made of a material usually reserved for those that protect, Wong is showing us how simple it is to manipulate our sense of security. The Ballistic Rose is a fascinating and elegant way to accessorize and have your voice be heard. Originally a wry art piece for the New York MoMA, the Ballistic Rose corsage can now be yours. It comes in a replica of a shotgun cartridge box, adding even more tongue-in-cheek appeal to this multi-use, avant-garde accessory. Check out www.citizen-citizen.com for more interesting and innovative ideas!
