These are inspired by Tibetan prayer flags, which Buddhist monks hang on the high steppes so the prayers printed on them can be whisked into the universe with help from the elements. I love the idea, but wanted something a little more culturally relevant than Sanskrit sutras. So I made my own prayer flags with icons of the hand-made and the natural world, and the American Sign Language alphabet.
Can't say it in images? spell it out subtly in ASL! Is your favorite icon missing? I'll make a custom stencil!
Flags are about 9"x6.5" each, cut from used but well-washed bedsheets, and zig-zag stitched to selvage from rolls of upholstery fabric. Images are painted with hand-cut stencils in water-based, low VOC spraypaint.
