Hot In The Hive: Fire Design Fire Extinguishers

    image
Lisanne Silverman on Sep 11, 2009 6:22 AM PDT
If you read up on the latest design blogs, you'll quickly discover that no object or apparatus is safe from a design makeover- fire extinguishers included! A European company called Fire Design sells a totally unique line of- you guessed it- artsy fire extinguishers, proving that items once thought to serve strictly functional purposes can have some flair of their own. For about $138 apiece, you can have your choice of anything from a spotted cow print (my favorite!) to a taxicab yellow NYC theme. Don't see one that strikes your fancy? Design your own here. If you're simply looking for a way around the standard red extinguisher, or prefer one to compliment (and possibly save) your decor, you'll find sleek chrome options too. We can't guarantee that these fancy fire putter-outers are any more exciting (if that's the word) to use than their more standard counterparts, but they'll at least enhance your surroundings during their downtime!

Price: 65 EUR, or about $138 each

With the days now shorter and the nights colder, consider bringing warmth and flattering light into your home with candles. They're an excellent way to add an upscale and sumptuous atmosphere to your home without spending very much money. And since they come in so many unique styles, shapes, scents, and sizes, there's a candle perfect for every setting and occasion. Best yet, I found a myriad of creative and totally unexpected candles and candle accessories in the Hive. So put those boring candlesticks away and set your house aglow with something much hotter, like these mahogany-scented tree trunk pillar candles. Structural stacked rocks are an organic and artistic way to display your favorite candles, and whimsical cupcake tea lights would make for a sweet gift idea. Whether named persimmon, ruby, tomato, burnt umber, or any other of the countless fiery color shades, good old red and orange are popping up all over the interior design world. Maybe it's in anticipation of the gorgeous shades of changing fall leaves or maybe it's just because a sliver of bold color in an otherwise neutral room has enthralled home stylists for decades, but the fact is you can't open a home decor magazine these days without getting an eyeful of serious red and orange drama. Home accessory trends like this one are easy to bring home...a chic orange tray on a coffee table, a dramatic red pillow on a couch, or even a vase full of orange poppies will do the trick! Summer Style: 7 Fire Pits for Hotel-Chic Outdoor Living

    image

If you're looking for a way to turn your plain ol' outdoor space into a hip gathering spot for evening parties that last well into the wee hours, look no further than fire pits. Not only do fire pits provide warmth once the sun sets, their attractive glow and crackling sound effects set the mood better than any other outdoor living accessory. Plus, they come in a wide array of designs and styles, from modern to Asian to rustic. The cherry on top? A lot of fire pits double as grills, which means you'll be bringing home some serious two-for-one summer fun. Hive Tip: Don't have room for a full-fledged fire pit? Invest in some small gel-fire burners - they're the sleek, grown-up version of tiki torches and provide bigger flames than candles!
