Fashion Week London: Luella Bartley Spring 2010 Ready to Wear ...

Luella Bartley recently presented her Spring 2010 Ready to Wear Collection at London Fashion Week. Her new collection goes dressier and less cheeky than we've come to expect from Bartley. It would be easy to imagine the late Jackie Kennedy wearing these pieces in 1965. Silhouettes were very feminine, with princess seams, pinched waists, and padded hips. She also showed several summer weight car coats in very ladylike "trapeze" shapes in happy, gorgeous colors, like a not-too-baby blue and a wonderful lipstick-y red. Other pieces included puffy dresses with velvet polka dots, sweetheart necklines, and Peter Pan collars. Bartley's recent collections have been far more precious with an abundance of frilly touches like dainty flower prints, ribbons, and tulle. By comparison, the latest collection is much more dressed up, despite the sugar pinks and lemon yellows. Even the one or two dresses with tulle trim appeared more sophisticated than one might expect from a designer who does things in an unapologetically girly way. New York Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2010: Whitney Eve

For her Spring/Summer 2010 Whitney Eve collection, Whitney Port seemed to use herself as a muse. Every single looked screamed "Whitney" and for someone like me who adores Whitney's style, that's definitely a good thing! This collection merged a downtown New York edge with a sweet and sunny California girl sensibility. Just like Whitney, it was very eclectic, funky, and had a retro reference point which was re-interpreted to create a modern feel. I absolutely died over this one slinky, metallic number! Other standouts included a cut-out brocade mini dress with a bow accent (such a great way to balance naughty and nice!) and a strapless full-skirted black dress with layers of tulle peeping through. Almost every style was adorned with ultra femme accents -- ruffles, bows, tulle, lace -- but the sweetness was definitely offset by sexy silhouettes and styles. Whitney also presented some fabulous separates, including a sharp-shouldered peplum jacket, a black blazer updated with layered of ruffles, and an oversized metallic blazer. Overall, anyone who loves Whitney's style will absolutely flip over all the pieces in her Whitney Eve line -- check the slideshow to see for yourself!

Brogues And Oxfords Get Flirty And Feminine!

    image
Alex Gambardella on Aug 26, 2009 10:22 AM PDT
Taking items that are typically associated with menswear and making them feminine is no novel idea when it comes to modern day fashion. We've seen it in every context from sexy tailored suits on the red carpet to boyfriend blazers on your average night out on the town. However, the latest trend in menswear-gone-girlie is here to serve as a welcome addition to your shoe collection, just in time for fall. Brogues and oxfords, though traditionally men's dress shoes, have certainly been worn by the ladies before... just not nearly as fashionably or with the same feminine edge as the latest styles provide! Studs, cut-outs, and bright colors vamp up the normally conservative-looking shoe, making them far more chic than what you'd stereotypically find worn by a butler. True, the whole idea of open toes and modern embellishments sort of negates the very definition of a brogue, but hey -- with modifications this cute, we won't toss them based on a silly technicality! Check the slideshow for some of my favorite oxford-inspired pairs!

Revamp Your Top Drawer With Retro Lingerie!

If the idea of retro lingerie makes you think of dreadful terms like "foundations" or worse, girdles, keep reading. Lacy little things have their place in many a top drawer, but retro lingerie, with a little more fabric and function, is just as alluring. Think along the lines of high-waisted panties and boyshorts, longline bras, tap shorts, and feminine ruffles- fun, right? The simpler shapes and modest cuts convey an innocence lost in the heaps of skimpy lace found in most stores these days, and even if you're far from innocent, it's fun to play the part every once in awhile. For a retro twist on a modern favorite, try Hanky Panky's hi-rise panty- it's perfect for high waisted jeans and skirts. Betsey Johnson's cami and tap pant set is a sweet take on this throwback trend, and if pale pink and ribbons are your thing, you'll love the charming 'Amelie' bralette from Undrest. Sure, these don't exactly agree with your SO's unofficial "less is more" mantra, but this was never really about them, was it? See the slideshow for my favorite retro underthings.

A one-of-a-kind girl, her one-of-a-kind day, and certainly, a one-of-a-kind gown to dress her in -- the gowns by Ilana L Designs and sister-designer Romy Collection fit the bill! On your wedding day, perfection isn't too much to ask, and it's easy to see why these gowns make for the perfect compliment to any bride's body. The dresses are so meticulously intricate, it's almost as if they belong in a gallery rather than a boutique. Both branches offer dresses from four collections: Elegant, Sexy, Romantic, and Royalty... but really, you could use any of those words to adequately describe any dress they carry! As if the very femininely-shaped cuts weren't flattering enough, the trademarked cut-outs and sheer fabrics make the happy bride who chooses these ensembles a sure sight for sore eyes. Feasting your eyes upon their collection will definitely satisfy your hunger for artistic and stylistic beauty, as the tremendous beauty of Ilana L and Romy Collection's works are as addictive as rich, red-velvet wedding cake!
