Tip Your Hat Towards Summer Style!

    image
Ida Hsiang on Jun 26, 2009 10:20 AM PDT
This is really the era of self-expression and as long as it looks good and you have the attitude to rock it, anything goes! Skinny jeans and wide-leg trousers are both in style; tops with super long hems as well as cropped cardigans have both become fashion staples, and any bright color, funky pattern and unique silhouette is welcome! The same goes for accessories and this summer, really top off your look with a hat! Usually reserved for slightly cooler weather say, in the winter and fall, hats are really making a statement this summer. From floppy, wide-brim straw hats reminiscent of the Kentucky Derby to classic, sharp fedoras that add edgy attitude to a flirty dress, the wide array of coif-topping styles make it fun and easy to find a shape that works for you! So give your daily SPF moisturizer a little help and invest in a great summer hat to stay cool and stylish all season! I'd say "hats off" to great style, but you'll be wanting to keep them on in this case! Check out the slideshow for a variety of styles and prices to fit your look and budget.

Channel Tomboy Agyness Deyn With Menswear Gone Girlie

Ever get the urge to raid your boyfriend's closet? Well you're in good company. All around the world girls are doing what many bold women have been doing forever -- taking classic men's pieces and making them their own. Inspired by the likes of women such as Marlene Dietrich and Katherine Hepburn (who was rarely seen without her slacks), today's tomboy icons like Agyness Deyn, Samantha Ronson and model Freja Beha Erichsen are keeping the menswear trend alive among the traditionally "fairer" sex. Even Coco Chanel was a rule-breaking tomboy! What do you need to get the tomboy look? A great pair of black trousers a good way to start -- look for some that have pleats or for ones that are a little roomy but still narrow in the leg like the "Burnisi" Pant by Theory. Top off those pants with a great plain white T-shirt or an updated button-down like ones from Alexander Wang. If you get a little chilly, add an oversized boyfriend blazer that is everywhere this season. Take cue from tomboy Agyness Deyn, who is often spotted wearing a fedora or a bowler hat and suspenders to add some whimsy to your look. Add some quirky accessories like argyle socks or a bowtie and a cummerbund (it's a super versatile belt!) and you're good to go. Check out the slideshow for how to get the look!

How Well Do You Know Your Hats?

I have a reasonable arsenal of hats in my wardrobe. Actually, I only rotate two of them: a black Fred Perry newsboy cap and a slouchy khaki driver's cap from H&M. With hats being such a hot commodity (and a nice Christmas gift) with hipsters and fashionistas alike, there is a happy myriad of styles that are hard to differentiate. Sure, there is the run-of-the-mill cap, but what about all those other ones? What makes my newsboy cap different from a driver's cap? Does Justin Timberlake have an affinity for fedoras or trilbies? Is a bowler strictly worn by bowlers or is it Charlie Chaplin's signature hat? Is a porkpie a diner delicacy or a jazzy head topper? And what exactly is a Panama hat? Instead of trying to go into the details of the different kind of hats that are spreading like wildfire throughout the fashion world, go to the slideshow for a pictorial glossary.

As summer nears its end, I'm trying to get the most out of all the comfy trends this season offered: maxi dresses, flowing tunics, playsuits...and the t-shirt dress. The best part about the latter is its versatility so I highly recommend purchasing one immediately if you don't own a version (check out my hive for a bunch of great options). Once you've found your fave, here's some inspiration on working the basic cotton frock for every activity. Click READ MORE to see how I made three looks from one James Perse t-shirt dress!

Style World: How To Rock Layers Like the Swedes!

Fashion would be nothing like the cultural mega-force it is today without international influence, and believe me, it goes much farther than the fact that another H&M store pops up every time we blink. That's why I'm so inspired by StyleDiary, where real people from all over the world are posting pictures of their outfits, with everything from the everyday to the experimental. Recently I've taken notice of quite a few Swedish Stylediarists whose outfits quickly caught my attention. Something about their layered looks was so effortless, as if anyone could create them just by using closet staples, yet these fashionistas threw on a unique touch making them truly stand out - a quirky hat, a belt layered over a sweater, or an unexpected pop of color. Click on my SLIDESHOW for seven Stylediarists from Sweden!
