Coquette Has Her Eye On Bombako Headbands

    image
Natalie Zee Drieu on Oct 7, 2009 5:23 AM PDT
It's no wonder why Gossip Girl brought headbands to the forefront once again, but these headbands by Bambako take them to a whole new level of sophistication. Details such as feathers, beading, and ornate ribbons make these a perfect compliment to any outfit without looking overly embellished or gaudy. For the Fall/Winter 2009 collection, designer Abigail Ricarte wanted to create pieces that were fun, strong, and ultra femme. "This season, I was really drawn to bold statement pieces by playing with different textures and heavy splashes of color in between. I wanted to appeal to a range of girls - from yuppies to hipsters," says Abigail. And given the variety of her collection, from the glitzy Night in Tunesia to the laidback feathered Oh Hey band, we can't imagine what type of girl wouldn't be able to find something she likes! We're Head Over Heels For These Handmade Headpieces!

Feathers, flowers, and over-sized bows- oh my! These adorable headpieces are literally popping up everywhere from the Spring '09 collections of Luella and Diane von Furstenberg even to my Friday night out. I'm going to shy away from terms like "headgear," as I've heard the word used to describe these accessories, but frankly I find it a bit off-putting and rather inaccurate and it kind of reminds me of those awkward childhood sleepovers when at bedtime a new friend put on this elaborate mechanical device to my shock and utter horror. But back to the matter at hand, these adorable headpieces that stole our hearts as children are once again finding their way atop our heads. Using the all-things-handmade online marketplace Etsy, young and innovative designers are making quite a splash (and some cash) with these charming creations and the creative competition has skyrocketed, yielding a plethora of designs to choose from. From delicate feather arrangements to floral garnishes all the way to whimsical scenes, these headpieces make it possible to adorn your head with pretty much whatever you please! Some of my favorite headpiece designers available on Etsy are portobello, charmschooldesign, and twelvetwentyeight. These crafty ladies have me reminiscing about my childhood (and no, not in the bedtime-braces kind of way) and they definitely have me clicking on PayPal. Take a gander at some of my favorite headpieces in my slideshow and also be sure to stop by their Etsy shops to see more!

Feathers, sequins, and metallics, oh my! Some of 2008's most popular fabric trends appear to be showing on red carpets across the globe - all at once! Australian singer Natalie Imbruglia looked red hot at Sir Richard Branson's "Rock The Kasbah" charity event in an ultra-glamorous backless sequin dress. Lagerfeld muse and fashion ingenue Kate Bosworth looked chic and confident in a short-sleeved belted dress constructed entirely out of shimmery layered feathers. And Elle Macpherson gave the Bond girls a run for their money in a plum metallic mini-dress at the London premiere of the new James Bond flick, Quantum Solace. Which look do you love the most? Elle's Fall A to Zee Trends: Feathered Trim

    image

Feathers are an excellent way to bring decadent colors and textures to your favorite fall fashions. Designers are adding feathers to a variety of pieces this fall, from hats and bags to shirts and even skirts. Steal some style inspiration from Her Royal Highness, the Queen of England; her always fabulous hats use feathers to make a sophisticated statement. There are also a variety of different colors, textures, and sizes of feathered trims to choose from. Create drama by layering incandescent teal peacock plumes, as they add an almost metallic quality to clothing. The soft and tawny russet of pheasant feathers also fit in perfectly with fall's rustic colors and textures. Check out Elle's A to Zee Trends to see Joe Zee's picks, and click on our SLIDESHOW to see some stunning examples of this trend, straight from the Hive.

Gloves are one of this season's must-have fall accessories. They appeared on just about every fall runway and it's not about utility--even if it doesn't get cold enough to throw a snowball where you live, chances are you'll see women wearing gloves in a few months! This year, besides the standard leather, velvet, or suede, we've seen lace, cotton, silk and sheer gloves plus bright colors, beading, feathers, and fur. It's a glove bonanza! Plus, since gloves take up hardly any room, you can amass a huge collection quickly. And vintage versions abound! Just click the SLIDESHOW for the selection.
