Bargain Drugstore Beauty That's Actually Worth Straying From ...

    image

For the most part, I'm pretty sure I can say that my rather extensive cosmetics collection reflects a fairly open-minded outlook on makeup brands -- I've got a good mixture of both bargain and high-end beauty loot. However, I think this unbiased balance is mostly due to the fact that I just compulsively buy cosmetics just about anywhere I go, and not because I necessarily view all makeup equally. In fact, if you really delve deep into the "drugstore vs. designer" makeup debate, you're bound to find that some high-priced picks at Sephora aren't much better than their cheaper Cover Girl counterparts, and some of better drugstore brands are actually more expensive than some you'd find at a department store beauty counter! So in light of economic hardship, how do you know which convenience store buys are actually good quality at a great value and not just a load of crap? Well, as a girl who's tried nearly everything and therefore knows a thing or two about money well-spent (and wasted) on makeup, I've compiled a list of some of my favorite beauty aisle steals -- from ridiculously cheap nail polish to top-notch makeup brushes at a fraction of MAC's cost. Check them out in the slideshow!

Flirt Shamelessly This Season With Fall's Spiky Lashes

I've always been a serious eyeliner girl, collecting everything from smoky kohl pencils in every color to budge-proof creme liner pots to liquid glitter liner. But my most recent beauty obsession? Spiky lashes -- either blacked-out versions of your natural lashes, or a little added help from a handy set of falsies like Kim Kardashian's. Unlike thick, showgirl-esque, llama-looking lashes that focus on heavy volume, fall's take on the lash trend gives you dramatic length without verging on unnatural. In other words, you'll have people commenting on how jealous they are of your flirty peepers instead of asking if you just walked off a Vegas stage. It's tough walking into a Sephora lately without being overwhelmed by the store's display of false eyelashes, boasting an impressive variety of designs, cuts, and colors ranging from modest to Vegas showgirl. However, the 2009 additions to Shu Uemura's Tokyo Lash Bar bring a level of innovation to your peepers that put any collection human-looking lashes to shame. Designed by the company's top creative minds from across the globe and inspired by nature scenes, the collection's premium edition lashes channel snowflakes and ski slopes with "snow twist," crisp autumn leaves with "goldglam leaf," and the ocean waves with "marine tide," just to name a few. While the designs may not be practical for an everyday night out on the town, you can't deny that they're gorgeously inventive! You could always stock up for next Halloween...

    Price: $79 a pair

Go Rock 'N Roll Glamorous With Heavy Metal Eyes

The spring runway shows left me thoroughly confused with all the different makeup trends. From bright colors to harsh 80's eyes, natural looks to metallic, Spring '09 brought us a lot of variety and lots of options. But by far the easiest and most flattering look was the metallic eye. Perfect for day or night, it can subtly sparkly and natural or sexy and smoky. One of my favorites was the wide-eyed look at Donna Karan. A beige to natural palette in gold and silver on eyelids paired with mile-long lashes gave the models an upscale yet natural look. Adding a warm coppery gold in the creases and a dusting of lighter shadow in the inside corners makes the eyes appear larger and more awake. When your eyes are sparkly like a disco ball, be sure to keep the rest of the face neutral. A touch of foundation and a terracotta blush is just enough to make skin look flawless and perfect. Finish it all off with a swipe of nude lipstick or gloss. The look will pair perfectly with all the beige and metallic clothes that dominated the runways. Take a look at the slideshow for some products that can help you perfect the look yourself!
