Hot In The Hive: Golden Sparkle Sauce

    image

I know, the name sounds delicious... but you can't eat this sauce! Golden Sparkle Sauce by Pop Beauty comes in what appears to be a puff paint squeeze tube, but it's actually a powerful weapon in maintaining smudge-free eye makeup! The shimmery substance can be applied as a layer on your lid over shadow and liner to seal eye makeup for a twinkling waterproof finish, or it can be mixed with loose glitter or pigment to serve as a long-lasting adhesive for otherwise hard-to-apply loose powder. The result? Budge-proof shadow and liner with a little dash of extra dazzle. Sparkling magic in a bottle!

Hot In The Hive: Shu Uemura Tokyo Lash Bar 2009

It's tough walking into a Sephora lately without being overwhelmed by the store's display of false eyelashes, boasting an impressive variety of designs, cuts, and colors ranging from modest to Vegas showgirl. However, the 2009 additions to Shu Uemura's Tokyo Lash Bar bring a level of innovation to your peepers that put any collection human-looking lashes to shame. Designed by the company's top creative minds from across the globe and inspired by nature scenes, the collection's premium edition lashes channel snowflakes and ski slopes with "snow twist," crisp autumn leaves with "goldglam leaf," and the ocean waves with "marine tide," just to name a few. While the designs may not be practical for an everyday night out on the town, you can't deny that they're gorgeously inventive! You could always stock up for next Halloween...

Fiercely '80s Eye Makeup Straight Off The Marc Jacobs Runway!

    image
Pauline Montupet on Jul 30, 2009 2:22 PM PDT
It was hard to ignore the '80s makeup that dominated the runways for Fall. Marc Jacobs sent his girls down the runway with a fierce-looking club kid eye makeup look and Versace and Zac Posen both featured "Debbie Harry meets Jerry Hall"-inspired makeup. Marc Jacobs wanted the eyes to take center stage -- so much so that he asked makeup artist Francois Nars to create 65 different makeup looks on the 65 models! What makes this eye makeup look different than just a normal smokey or dark eye? Unlike a heavy-lined eye, these '80s-inspired looks take it a step further, with the shadow up to the crease and often all the way up to the eyebrow, creating a large oval around the eye. To cop the look yourself, accentuate your usual blacks and browns with cobalt blues, deep greens, bright purples, reds, fuchsias, and even some glitter (not too much -- we're not going for Boy George here). An easy way to get a more street-appropriate version of the look is to shade the eye all over with a sheer eyeshadow of peach, gold, or soft blue. Lightly rim the entire eye with a black eyeliner (no need to be perfect since you will be covering and blending with shadow), then use a darker highly-pigmented shade like an espresso or navy on the lower lid and blend towards the crease and outer corner. Check out the slideshow for some great products to get the look, and click "See Video" to watch Marc Jacobs' makeup master Francois create the looks for the Fall '09 show.

Hot In The Hive: Cat Cosmetics Smolder Eye Pencil

When it comes to testing out new beauty products, I'm my own guinea pig. I'll try anything once, which is most likely the most logical explanation for all of my busted-at-the-seams makeup bags, overflowing with a whole slew of rainbow shades I've hardly given a second look at. This compulsion towards all things cosmetic is also the reason why I almost tripped over myself in excitement at the chance to try Cat Cosmetics Smolder Eye Pencil, a double-ended 2-in-1 shadow/liner duo designed for achieving dramatic bedroom eyes on the go. After all, if I were to favor any kind of makeup over the rest, anything that can be described as both "smokey" and "2-in-1" would certainly top the list. The verdict? Despite the helpful application suggestions that come with it, the cream-based bronze shadow end is a little tough to blend for maximum "smolder" effect, but because of its no-budge formula, the product makes an awesome smudge-free liner duo!

Update Your Makeup Routine With New Eyeliners And Eyeshadows!

I was never an eyeshadow/eye liner girl, until I met that perfect palette. Until then, I wore basics - dark brown mascara, dark brown liner, and MAYBE a little glitter if it was a special occasion. Then, I happened upon the NARS 'best' Palette, and my life was forever changed. How simple it was to change my look for day and evening - I could hardly believe it! You know it's good when your friends roll their eyes and say, "Ugh, how do you get your shadow to look like that?!" One piece was all I needed to update my look - and at a reasonable price at that. Check out my SLIDESHOW for a few ways to update your eye makeup routine!

Hot Trend: Matching Your Eyeshadow To Your Clothes

    image
    on Jan 25, 2008 1:16 PM PST
Rules, rules, rules! Never wear blue eyeshadow, never match your eyeshadow to your eye color, and most importantly... never match your eyeshadow to your clothing. Enough already! These days, rules are made to be broken. Store shelves and online beauty destinations are lined with hundreds of colors, representing the entire chromatic spectrum. Neutral browns, buffs, taupes and fawns needn't be the only shades you liven your lids with. The new rule of thumb is if you're wearing a color that looks great on you, then you can wear it on your eyes as well.
