Travel Around The World In The Comfort Of Your Own Home!

    image
Ida Hsiang on Oct 19, 2009 8:23 AM PDT
It's time to spice things up at home, and not just in the bedroom either! While we would all love to be jet-setters and fly off to exotic places halfway across the world, it is not a possibility for many of us due to money, time or both. Although the mysticism of far away lands may be enticing, but not quite within reach at the moment, these sumptuous luxuries and richly saturated materials can be brought back and enjoyed in your own home. With ethnic African and safari-inspired prints that make your living area feel like a trip to the savannah, richly saturated and beautifully decorated rugs and home accents that make you feel like you're laying back in a Persian palace, and the minimalist sophistication of Asian-inspired pieces that help give you a peaceful and meditative state, you can take a trip around the world in the comfort of your own home. Click on the slideshow to see some home decor that will add the alluring glamour of distant destinations to your living space.

New York Fashion Week Spring 2010: Diane von Furstenberg

I always come away from a Diane von Furstenberg show (ok, ok, a DvF "picture viewing") with more ideas than both my head and wallet can handle: tons of hair accessory inspiration, the sudden urge mix patterns without abandon, and perhaps most notably, a completely overstuffed wish list. Her Spring/Summer 2010 show at New York Fashion Week was no exception- the looks presented a highly wearable, more elegant take on globetrotter style with looks ranging from printed dresses layered under belted safari jackets to saturated desert-hued separates in a variety of textures, all topped off with colorful bangles and the most playfully whimsical hairpieces. Her use of patterns was astoundingly imaginative- blurry florals, gilded ethnic designs, and slightly abstract animal prints made for a collection that was adventurous and refined all at once, not to mention realistic-- whether intentional or not, the idea of layering a simple grey tee under an embellished dress exhibits the kind of stylish versatility we can all appreciate these days. Explore Spring Trends With Floral And Ethnic Prints

    image

The long awaited arrival of spring means that there are beautiful flowers in bloom and possibilities of travel to far flung locales. Even if those flowers aren't blooming yet or you have no plans (or the money!) to go to exotic lands, why don't you bring those inspirations into your wardrobe instead? These days, floral prints are no longer reserved for your grandmother. Celebs like Kate Moss and Jessica Alba have been seen wearing floral prints which were everywhere on the spring 2009 runway shows. My pick for embracing the floral trend is with an abstract floral print skirt from Urban Outfitters. Ethnic prints are all about color and bold designs. Look for traditional prints like the Paisley Smocked Tube Dress from Forever 21. If you're not really a print wearing person, then try accessorizing with floral bag or a batik print scarf. No one will know you got it online while wearing your pajamas, so you can say you got in years ago in Morocco! Check out the slideshow to see more floral and ethnic prints fit for spring!

Everyone should have at least one statement piece. You know, that necklace that completely upstages the dress or blouse. And I'm not talking diamonds and rubies here. No, the statement pieces I'm referring to are usually costume and quite often, ethnic. Many of these pendants were born in the 1960s when bohemian dressing was all the rage but they can easily breathe new life into today's simple, staple wardrobe pieces as well. Try them with a tunic, a simple black dress, or a white linen blouse. Just click the SLIDESHOW to pick your favorite!

Ashley Thompson opened Owl€™s Lab in New York City right after moving from a sunny beach in California. And it shows. "Owl's Lab is known for playing into the style trends from both coasts," Ashley explained during my tour of her packed racks and shelves. "I would say that's one of my distinguishing qualities as a buyer, being from the West Coast, but being influenced by my life on the East Coast. I blend the two into the Owl's Lab wardrobe." Stylehive interns Abby and Emily had a great afternoon trying on the latest Owl's Lab outfits and accessories last week. Click SEE SLIDESHOW for 10 amazing oufits they put together with Ashley's help, and read on for our interview with Ashley and her fashion forecasts for summer and fall.
