Wardrobe Dos And Don'ts With Celeb Stylist Phillip Bloch

    image

Celebrity stylist Phillip Bloch has no wish to see you in head-to-toe neon. "Please do not wear pop colors as an entire outfit, I beg of you!" he warns, the command made less severe by the winking cheekiness in his tone. "A hot pink gown could be a hot pink mess!" It's his patented way of giving fashion direction with honesty and a dose of sassy sugar that has made Bloch one of the premiere celebrity stylists in Hollywood with a client roster that reads like a Hollywood honor roll. Halle Berry? Check. Jennifer Lopez? Here! Drew Barrymore? Present. And the A-list goes on and on. In my recent interview with Bloch over New York Fashion Week, we also talked about the fashion "dos" every woman wants to have in her closet. His favorites? "I love the big, comfy boyfriend jacket but then it's all about the silhouette--you want something slim and sexy underneath. You do not want to be in something baggy under there." What else? "I think the little bump shoulder is great, definitely the statement necklace, and I much like a high boot. I'm not the biggest fan of the little shoe-boot, especially when you wear it with a skirt and you see that big gap in-between [the ankle and the top of the shoe]--it cuts the leg!"

Phillip also shared with me the best designers we're not wearing: "I'm a big fan of Zac Posen. He gets the hype but not everyone gets to wear him. Also Jason Wu, Alexander Wang, Erin Fetherston, Thakoon, Rodarte--and if you can't buy their clothes, look at what they're doing and get inspired by them!" Phillip also gave me the skinny on the concept of "fat-free dressing" using Flexees, Maidenform's affordable shapewear brand (which Phillip dished is what Lady Gaga wears when she performs). "They've made a lot of the pieces so you can actually wear them as outerwear, too, and they come in great fashion colors." And Hivers, if Phillip's left you wanting more personal styling advice, look no further: enter to win a Red Carpet Makeover by Phillip from Flexees and Star Magazine. Check out more on Phillip at his site and remember to stay away from monochromatic neon (you've been warned).

New York Fashion Week Runway: Erin Fetherston Is Fit For ...

It's hard to mention Erin Fetherston without thinking of her whimsical and fantastical take on fashion. Her Fall 2009 collection was no different, but was a definite departure from her usual wispy ethereal dresses her devoted fans love. Instead, Fetherston threw in a little bit harlequin, toy soldier, and wild carnival themes. It may seem a little dark and sinister, but everything from the structured teacup shaped skirts to clown striped tights still had classic Erin Fetherston charm. A standout look was a black swing coat with a large bow accent and black leather trim accessorized with black leather driving gloves. Wondering who made those glittery animal masks worn atop the models' heads? They were the work of Fetherston's fiance, Hedi Ferjani. Black-red lipstick and layered crimped hair pulled into a loose bun are some of the ways to incorporate Fetherston's living doll lifestyle without breaking your bank this coming fall. NYFW Fall '08 Snapshot: Erin Fetherston

Fashion favorite Erin Fetherston presented an absolutely charmed fall collection Friday night at New York Fashion Week. Her party-perfect dresses were given extra edge with bold tights, and touches of color, while subtle, added dimension to the layered looks. Jewel tones and unexpected fabrics like velvet added extra luxury, and the form-fitting silhouettes were a refreshing change from the trapeze and babydoll trends of seasons' past. Wispy layers were a perfect match for structured coats, and the featured looks struck a rare balance in their ability to function as fashionably off of the runways as they did on them. Tights and flats don't seem to be going anywhere for awhile, but as long as Erin keeps putting her signature spin on them, I'll happily go along.

Erin Fetherston Is Blowing Up in 2008

Erin Fetherston's girly, whimsical designs adorn some of Hollywood's edgiest starlets, including Kirsten Dunst and Zooey Deschanel. 2007 was a breakout year for the Berkeley native, and 2008 promises to be even bigger and better. Fetherston's penchant for ethereal gowns has garnered a cult-like following that only grows larger with every new season, from her Spring 2007 collection (her first to show as part of fashion week) to her stellar collections for Fall/Winter 2007, Holiday 2007/2008, and Spring 2008. And what does Fetherston do to top off such an impressively productive year for a new designer on the block? Why, collaborate with Target for their latest GO International designer offering (in stores now), of course!

Take at look at our slideshow of the highlights from all of Erin's 2007 collections and 2008 previews, and see what all the fuss is about!
