One Man's Recyclables Are Another Man's... Furniture?

    image
Ida Hsiang on Jul 2, 2009 10:21 AM PDT
How is it that a living space can get so cluttered? Some people are lucky and are born with the "organized and tidy" gene. I got the "cluttered pack-rat" gene instead. With every new beginning, I promise myself that I will only keep what is absolutely necessary and all that is not under that category will be swiftly thrown, recycled or donated. Instead, there are piles of fashion and gossip magazines dotting my floor, suitcases holding clothes because my closet and dressers are full and shelves of random knick-knacks, accessories and souvenirs that I swear are sentimental, but probably wouldn't notice if they were gone. Some fellow pack-rats have found a creative and environmental way to rid our already small living spaces of junk and clutter and produce objects that are beautiful, funky and totally useful! From trash-cans and large vases made from old magazines (i could make a patio set) to bright, extravagant chandeliers made from "stuff" and a place to rest your feet made up of shoes that used to be on them, innovative designers are helping lighten the land-fill load and make our homes more fun and functional! Because the items are made of recyclables, subtle details will be different, ensuring that you truly have a one-of-a-kind piece. Sounds like something you've been looking for to help set the theme of a new house, or to spruce up a room? Check out the slideshow to see some favorite recycled furniture ideas and find one for your space!

Introducing Elroy Apparel, an independent fashion designer with some great ideas from Vancouver. Elroy Apparel is much more than just another clothing line. The company was developed as a stand against impending environmental destruction. By providing socially responsible, health-conscious women with fashion forward, eco-friendly clothing, we have created an alternative- a beautiful garment with an even more beautiful story behind it. Designer Leanne McElroy creates sophisticated streetwear for the contemporary health-conscious woman who cares not only about what she looks like, but about the story her clothing carries as well. DeviDoll Delivers Ethical Fashion to Vintage Fashionistas

According to the EPA, four million tons of textiles are sent to landfills every year. Four million tons! Of course, we vintage fashionistas are doing our own small part to alleviate this problem since vintage clothing is environmentally friendly and carries a lower carbon footprint than anything new. But that doesn't mean we don't sometimes like to treat ourselves to a little something special from an up-and-coming designer. Devidoll.com, a UK-based ethical fashion site, includes the work of a number of designers transforming pre-consumer textile waste, repurposed kimonos, and vintage cashmere into eco-friendly finds for vintage fashionistas. Got Cashmere? Check Out Leroy & Perry, A Barney's Green ...

If you're like me you could swaddle yourself in cashmere at just about any time, especially now that the fall chill is working its way in. Lutz & Patmos may be some of the best cashmere and sweaters out there! The highly coveted knitwear line who has collaborated with the likes of Coach, VW and Uniqlo and has had guest celebrity designers like Kirsten Dunst, Liv Tyler and Carine Roitfeld has done it again with their Leroy & Perry line. The eco-friendly collection created exclusively for Barney's Green not only looks great, but gives back too. A percentage of the proceeds go to the Alliance for Climate Protection, an organization whose goal is to provide comprehensive solutions for the climate crisis. The organic cotton sweaters are soft and perfect for layering, but my favorite has to be the vest made out of %100 recycled t-shirts. Get them now at Barney's Co-Op stores and online at barneys.com!

Editor's Pick: Cole Scego Design Is Made In the Shade (Literally)

    image
Lisanne Silverman on Jun 26, 2008 2:16 PM PDT
Sometimes people surprise you. Take designer Cole Scego. At first glance, his color-saturated work had me thinking he spends his days and nights in the most happening of urban locales. But no. Cole actually lives in the woods of rural Missouri with his wife and two Weimaraners. When asked if he feels at all isolated from city life, Cole maintains the bright lights just weren't for him! Turns out, it's not where you are but who you are and what you believe in that really matters. And Cole's line of quirky, offbeat furniture reflects both his love of nature, and concern for the environment. Check out my slideshow of my favorite furniture and art from Cole Scego Design.
