One Man's Recyclables Are Another Man's... Furniture?

    image
Ida Hsiang on Jul 2, 2009 10:21 AM PDT
How is it that a living space can get so cluttered? Some people are lucky and are born with the "organized and tidy" gene. I got the "cluttered pack-rat" gene instead. With every new beginning, I promise myself that I will only keep what is absolutely necessary and all that is not under that category will be swiftly thrown, recycled or donated. Instead, there are piles of fashion and gossip magazines dotting my floor, suitcases holding clothes because my closet and dressers are full and shelves of random knick-knacks, accessories and souvenirs that I swear are sentimental, but probably wouldn't notice if they were gone. Some fellow pack-rats have found a creative and environmental way to rid our already small living spaces of junk and clutter and produce objects that are beautiful, funky and totally useful! From trash-cans and large vases made from old magazines (i could make a patio set) to bright, extravagant chandeliers made from "stuff" and a place to rest your feet made up of shoes that used to be on them, innovative designers are helping lighten the land-fill load and make our homes more fun and functional! Because the items are made of recyclables, subtle details will be different, ensuring that you truly have a one-of-a-kind piece. Sounds like something you've been looking for to help set the theme of a new house, or to spruce up a room? Check out the slideshow to see some favorite recycled furniture ideas and find one for your space!

Sexy And Stylish Shoes That Are Vegan And Totally Green!

    image

Noticing a decided lack of anything remotely sexy in the way of vegan shoes, Rebecca Mink - a lifelong animal and earth activist - created her own: glamorous, towering luxury kicks made from sustainable, non-animal resources including rubber, wood, cork, and organic fabrics. When she first showed up in Italy almost 10 years ago, sketches in hand, 16 factories showed her the door, refusing to consider manufacturing such an unprecedented product. Luckily Marco Gambassi, whose family has crafted shoes for generations, viewed her project as a creative challenge. And thanks to Italian engineering, when Mink shoes were machine-tested for durability, they outlasted their conventional counterparts, proving that non-leather is a viable footwear option for green fashionistas. These "Vulture" cork wedges with delicate double ankle straps (as seen here in Lucky April 2009) could possibly be the perfect summer heel. Available by special order only - email info@minkshoes.com. Make Sure Your Occasion Jewelry Is Conflict-Free With Diamond ...

    image

Not all diamonds are a girl's best friend. No one wants to look down at their jewelry and know that their stone caused conflict in far away countries and harm to their planet (thoughts we can't escape after seeing "Blood Diamond" and reading eco-friendly websites). So what do we do? Give up diamonds? The answer lies in Diamond Nexus Labs. This company was eco-friendly long before the "green" craze, and all of their diamonds are both environmentally friendly and conflict-free. However, with all the benefits to these stones, you won't be sacrificing quality-- something you'd never dream of giving up when it comes to engagement rings or special occasion jewelry.

Six Ways To Make Your Beauty Routine More Eco-Friendly

Love the planet? Having spent centuries of using and abusing Mother Earth, it's time for humans to start rethinking their normal daily routines. We know it's important to conserve, but so is being beautiful! Start your day off on the right foot by being Earth-conscious throughout your morning prep and it won't only be the planet wanting to thank you for your thoughtfulness! With these helpful tips, you can be the bio-vixen this planet needs and still turn as many heads as you would if you were to get all gussied up the old fashioned way!

    1. Good morning, sunshine! You wake up in the morning and head to the powder room. First off, preservation is key. Sometimes it can be as simple as drawing a little light into the bathroom from the windows or candles (a.k.a mood-lighting)! Morning breath's a killer, so you might want to take care of that first. All-natural toothpaste on an all-recycled toothbrush makes for an, all-in-all, eco-friendly mouth. Next, your pores will probably want in on the planet preservation action, so treat them to an organic and fresh facial wash, like this one from Nude Skincare, and if you're skipping the shower, follow it with a toxin free moisturizer, like this one from Philosophy.
