Hot In The Hive: DEFY Bags

    image
Ida Hsiang on Nov 20, 2009 6:25 AM PST
So everywhere you go these days, people are making an effort to "go green", from light bulbs to cars to clothing. Anything that helps out Mother Earth, I'm for it! That's why when I spotted these DEFY Bags, I had to check them out. Not only are their bags unique and completely cool, but they also make a statement -- political, social commentary, or just random observations of art and culture in an eye-catching and slightly retro design. And it's not just the way the bags look that make DEFY Bags so hot, it's the fact that they also have a 'go green' attitude. These messenger bags are perfect to carry around pretty much anything you'll need throughout the day and each one is truly individual because artists hand create the picture on the front from old billboard signs. Don't see a picture that expresses the true you? You can design your own flap! Another cool thing to check for after you find the bag that shows your personality the most? Look inside and see just what kind of message the original billboard was selling! Edgy, personal and made of recycled goods, DEFY Bags are worth more than a second glance!

    Price: Small: $115.00 - Medium: $120.00 - Large: $125.00

Lancome, Urban Decay, And More Of Your Favorite Makeup Brands ...

Using beauty products may not be the most environmentally harmful part of your daily routine (well, unless of course you're addicted to hairspray), but if you're into going the natural route for the sake of saving your skin and the planet, you're certainly not the only one! Lucky for us eco-conscious makeup mavens, some of our favorite beauty brands have jumped on the green bandwagon and made natural, organic, and eco-chic versions of their popular products. For example, Lancome's Juicy Tubes Pure are just like the old favorite, but this time with 95% natural ingredients! And Urban Decay's shadow box packs 10 of their favorite shadows into a sustainable wooden box complete with a cruelty-free eyeshadow brush. I won't be dramatic and say that a few coats of organic mascara will save the world, but hey -- every little gesture counts! Take a browse through the slideshow to see which big-name brands have gone natural!

Looking for the ultimate winter vacay that won't betray your newfound "save the planet" attitude and go green regime? No, I'm not crazy -- you can enjoy a fun-filled snowy getaway without stomping carbon footprints all over the ozone! The beautiful wintry town of Les Cerniers, located in the heart of the Swiss Alps, is home to WhitePod, the ultimate eco-friendly ski resort that'll have you relaxing and romping in the snow rather than roughing it for survival. The retreat is comprised of 15 one- and two-bedroom "pods," all fully equipped with bathrooms, wood-burning stoves, and organic furnishings, that use minimal water and electricity to allow for a more pristine mountain environment experience while still providing the comfort and luxury of high-end lodging. Spend the day skiing (with the help of private ski lifts), snowboarding, paragliding, or even dog-sledding, then relax the night away over dinner and drinks at the community chalet or massages at the hotel spa. I'm sure the Swiss Alps are gorgeous all year round, but you won't get to experience the mountains quite like this (or quite this eco-chic!) at any other seasonal resort! Take a look at the slideshow for the hotel's breath-taking surroundings and unique amenities!

One Man's Recyclables Are Another Man's... Furniture?

    image

How is it that a living space can get so cluttered? Some people are lucky and are born with the "organized and tidy" gene. I got the "cluttered pack-rat" gene instead. With every new beginning, I promise myself that I will only keep what is absolutely necessary and all that is not under that category will be swiftly thrown, recycled or donated. Instead, there are piles of fashion and gossip magazines dotting my floor, suitcases holding clothes because my closet and dressers are full and shelves of random knick-knacks, accessories and souvenirs that I swear are sentimental, but probably wouldn't notice if they were gone. Some fellow pack-rats have found a creative and environmental way to rid our already small living spaces of junk and clutter and produce objects that are beautiful, funky and totally useful! From trash-cans and large vases made from old magazines (i could make a patio set) to bright, extravagant chandeliers made from "stuff" and a place to rest your feet made up of shoes that used to be on them, innovative designers are helping lighten the land-fill load and make our homes more fun and functional! Because the items are made of recyclables, subtle details will be different, ensuring that you truly have a one-of-a-kind piece. Sounds like something you've been looking for to help set the theme of a new house, or to spruce up a room? Check out the slideshow to see some favorite recycled furniture ideas and find one for your space!

Go Green This Spring With Earthy Statement Jewelry By Monique ...

I've started to look forward to my spring wardrobe of pretty neutrals mixed with hard-edge pieces, eco-friendly fibers and comfortable €œHammer€ pants. But I feel like I have a big hole missing in my jewelry selection when it comes to pairing with these new looks. Large statement pieces were all over the runway, yet they're not in my closet. Enter Monique Pean. The designer, a former investment banker from Washington, DC, has me drooling over her beautiful jewelry. Cameron Diaz and Jamie King are already fans of these gorgeous and sustainable gems. An avid traveler, Pean was inspired by the indigenous cultures to create a sustainable fine jewelry line. The Bering Collection draws from Alaskan Native culture and its adaptation of rare and exotic materials. The line uses the remains of fossilized walrus, caribou and Baleen as well as devastation-free diamonds and 100% recycled gold. 10% of her signature Bering Collection goes to benefit the Alaskan Native Arts foundation. But that€™s not it for her charity work! Her other collection, Charity: Water, collaborates with a nonprofit organization committed to bringing clean water to impoverished people. 50% of the proceeds from each piece goes to build wells and bring clean water and sanitation to communities in need. While these precious pieces may cost you a pretty penny, you know they will last a lifetime, considering some of the material, like the woolly mammoth ivory, has already been around 12,000 years! Prices range from $450-$1,000 for the Charity: Water collection and $2,500 - $45,000 for the Bering Collection. Check out the SLIDESHOW to see some styles!
