  Egg vase

  Marcel Wanders designed this piece as part of an experimental project initiated by Rosenthal for the Dutch foundation Droog Design. The sponge pieces are created by dipping a sponge form into fluid porcelain clay. After drying, the piece is fired in an oven where the sponge burns away leaving only the porcelain in its place. In this way porcelain products can be made without a mold. The form of the egg vase was derived from stuffing latex condoms with hard-boiled eggs.

  Tjep. - After Do Break, now Shock Proof

  Shock proof Related project Do Break Description Shock Proof is a collection of existing vases upon which Tjep. has applied the Do Break principle. When broken the vases don't fall apart and remain watertight because of a special rubber coating that is applied to the inside. The cracks form a new superimposed decorative pattern, witness to dramatic events to which the vases may be subjected: anything from a lovers quarrel to earthquakes.

  Sponge Vase

  The quality of porcelain is best reflected through its fine and thin character.By using moulds you hardly get this quality out of porcelain.Marcel Wanders developed a technique to produce porcelain objects without the use of plaster moulds. A natural sponge is taken and dipped under fluid porcelain clay, the clay impregnates the sponge and after drying the porcelain impregnated dry sponge is burned in a regular ceramic oven. The sponge totally disappears and the porcelain perfectly copies the fine shapes of the sponge. In this way we create a product which is industrially reproducible but different every time and which has the ability to show the best porcelain has in it. The same process is developed further on to make products by using pre-shaped artificial foam and make porcelain objects out of these, the foam bowl is a first example of the great possibilities with this technique.This vase is developed in a project for Droog Design and Rosenthal.
