babydoll is typically defined as a short (usually very sexy) nightgown. More often than traditional sleepwear, babydolls are adorned with lace, ruffles, bows and ribbons. And quite frequently they are made from sheer fabric. While babydolls are classified as "sleepwear" by most lingerie retailers and are certainly meant to be worn to bed, they're not really meant to be slept in.
