Phoenicia Association Brings Art And Style To Phoenix

    image
Pauline Montupet on Sep 3, 2009 2:18 PM PDT
There's a new kid on the block in Phoenix! Phoenicia Association, a well-cultivated men's store and gallery space, opened earlier this month. Inside the seemingly abandoned brick building holds some of coolest, hard to find duds in the area. Started by friends Jeff Mann and Kyle Simone (both avid street fashion connoisseurs and patrons of the arts) were looking to cultivate a new way of thinking about and looking at art and design in the Phoenix metropolitan area. The shop is split into two sections: one that sells hard to find men's clothing labels April77, Wrath Arcane, Hixsept, and 3Sixteen, and the other that houses a gallery with monthly rotating artists. If you're in the area, make sure not to miss the opening parties for the new gallery shows that feature local artists, musicians and DJs! Check them out at www.wearephoenicia.com.

Ever sit at your work desk and wonder what life would have been like if you pursued your dreams of becoming a DJ? ...No? Yeah, me neither... but I still think it would be pretty fun to give it a shot without having to bribe the club mixmasters into letting me dabble with their ultra-expensive equipment. With the Crosley Portable USB Turntable, an exclusive Urban Outfitters gadget, you can start spinnin' and scratchin' all your favorite old-school tracks with just a quick plug-in to your Mac or PC, and even transfer them to your iPod. Now all you need to do is raid your parents' collection of ancient LPs and you can get to experimenting away with your untapped beat-rocking skills.

    Price: $160

Hot In The Hive: Numark iDJ2

One of my favorite music documentaries is Scratch, which delves into the background of the hip-hop DJ and turntablism. From clips of the famous 1984 Grammy Awards with Herbie Hancock & Grand Mixer DXT performance of "Rockit" to interviews with modern day DJ legends, Scratch covered it all. The most impressive part was seeing all the DJs show off their skills at the turntables. While definitely inspiring, I certainly don't have the space or money for a set of turntables and stacks of records. Thank goodness modern technology is here to the rescue! The Numark iDJ2 is the first mixing station that enables you to play two tracks simultaneously from the same iPod. Use the two large wheels to scratch without harming a single vinyl and even record your own demos. Who knows, you may go from DJing your friends' parties to hitting the big time one day. This is also a great gift idea for your musically inclined dad for Father's Day!

Fashionindie Week Brooklyn: New York Couture Brings Down the ...

Last night's New York Couture party and fashion show at Mansion was two super hot floors of style scenesters who came to see Cassie Kogler and her models rock it on the runway, and rock it they did! DJ Benny Blanco spun up a storm as the crowd went wild for Kogler's unapologetically outrageous punk-rock-meets-prima-ballerina creations. Oversized tutus, hoop skirts, metallic leggings, and brightly printed dresses were topped off with big hair and glittery makeup, and the models (who partied with the crowd before the show) were easily having as much fun as the partygoers themselves- but would you really expect anything different from a designer who puts panda faces on dresses? Didn't think so!

Style Party: Mixing Fashion and Art at Bass Museum

I recently attended SWANK: A Mad Tea Party @ Bass Museum of Art, and let me tell you, they put on a hell of a party down there, inviting DJ Lauren A. for dancing on the Museum's terrace, mini cupcakes like those Alice was served during the 'tea party' (passed around on cool lit-up white square trays), and tropical cocktails instead of tea. The party was a blast, with eclectic music that kept everyone moving and shouting for a few words. The Bass put together a group of very interesting artists to help us travel down Alice's rabbit hole, including Miami designers Karelle Levy for the Mad costumes, and Cindy Borjas of Rella Jewelry. Installation in the Bass Cafe created by local designers Blanco and Jurgen looked amazing, and made me feel like Alice herself! Robert Wilson's VOOM Portraits were displayed on life size flat panel TV's. The famous characters in the portraits appeared still at first, but then you would see an eye blink, a hand move, or simply a dog breathe heavily...so cool! See my slideshow for party pics!
