New York Fashion Week Spring 2010: Diane von Furstenberg

I always come away from a Diane von Furstenberg show (ok, ok, a DvF "picture viewing") with more ideas than both my head and wallet can handle: tons of hair accessory inspiration, the sudden urge mix patterns without abandon, and perhaps most notably, a completely overstuffed wish list. Her Spring/Summer 2010 show at New York Fashion Week was no exception- the looks presented a highly wearable, more elegant take on globetrotter style with looks ranging from printed dresses layered under belted safari jackets to saturated desert-hued separates in a variety of textures, all topped off with colorful bangles and the most playfully whimsical hairpieces. Her use of patterns was astoundingly imaginative- blurry florals, gilded ethnic designs, and slightly abstract animal prints made for a collection that was adventurous and refined all at once, not to mention realistic-- whether intentional or not, the idea of layering a simple grey tee under an embellished dress exhibits the kind of stylish versatility we can all appreciate these days. Disco Fever On The Runway!

Get ready to throw on some shimmer and shine and hit the dance floor with disco inspired clothing! Sequins, beads, and lame were all over the spring runways and are still going strong for fall. The 2009 sequins trend isn't about prom dress type sequins and formal glamour, but rather scattered and broken sequins and beads that add a touch of luster. There are so many ways to get the look-- from clothing to accessories, your options are endless. Don't be afraid to pair them with pared down pieces for a cool juxtaposition of dressy and casual. Throw on a pair of sequined leggings for a sporty futuristic touch or a sequined t-shirt instead of your usual cotton tee. Diane von Furstenberg's slouchy "Stephanie" bag is the perfect daytime option, balancing shine and shimmer with its slouchy boho shape. Check out the slideshow for some more glittering choices.

Leather Skirts for Fall from DvF and 3.1 Phillip Lim

I saw a leather miniskirt while shopping the other day and was instantly drawn to it, but instantly wondered if I could pull it off. I decided against it, but then-- while perusing the fashion pages later-- I came across a couple of gems which helps to quell my fears of leather. I love the pleated leather mini from 3.1 Phillip Lim; it is a take on the popular skater skirt silhouette. I plan to pair it with black tights and it will look great with platform ankle booties too. Another leather skirt that caught my eye is this leather pencil skirt from Diane von Furstenberg. It works perfectly for the office as well as for after work cocktails when paired with classic leather pumps.

Flutter Away With Butterfly Prints For Summer!

    image
Anna Yu on Jul 9, 2009 2:25 PM PDT
They call it the "butterfly effect"-- the theory that a butterfly can flap its wings in Chile to create a windstorm in Central Park (not to be taken literally, of course). Regardless of the power the butterfly's wings have, it's obvious that they're a trend to watch out for! Names like Diane von Furstenberg and Juicy Couture have embraced the butterfly, so it's no wonder these beautiful creatures have translated well into clothing and accessories. Consider it a happy medium between ultra-feminine floral prints and sultry animal prints. You can go small and subtle with a butterfly print scarf or go big with a skirt that looks like butterflies are resting on top! Remember, with all printed apparel, it's best to keep accessories simple. This summer, stand out from the crowd of floral prints and reach for the butterflies instead! Take a look at my slideshow for a selection of butterfly prints.
