How To Sew An Exposed Zipper

    image
Alex Gambardella on Jul 16, 2009 7:20 AM PDT
Nicole Smith is an editor at CraftStylish, a site dedicated to fashionable how-tos and do-it-yourself crafts. Below she introduces a fun project in which you can embellish clothing yourself with exposed zippers.

Zippers have come a long way over the years; they're used in everything from garments and shoes to accessories and home decor. You may install a zipper simply to let you in and out of a garment, but why not make it stylish at the same time? In the Spring '09 issue of SewStylish, couture sewer Anna Mazur showed you how to insert zippers four ways. Here is one of the techniques inspired by many designers including Marni. When installing an exposed zipper, you can throw all the zipper-insertion rules out the window. Turn the seam allowances to the right side, topstitch the zipper over them to conceal the fabric edges, and let the zipper tape show on the outside of the garment. You can choose a matching or contrasting zipper for even more stand-out style. Click on over to the CraftStylish blog for the full step-by-step instructions... then get sewing!

Looking great and feeling good; is it possible? Of course, says swimwear designer Rebecca Virtue, creator of Becca Swim. For the woman who dreads buying a swimsuit, Becca Swim offers comfortable and wearable pieces that are fashionable and stylish. Every season Virtue pans thousands of prints to choose the best colors for her collection. Her pieces are mix and match with a variety of sizes, shapes and colors. Sit poolside in a Mediterranean-inspired aqua number, or lounge under a cabana in a Grecian-inspired print. While you lounge in the sun, you can give yourself props for helping the environment as well; Becca Swim is one of the first swimwear designers to have an eco-friendly collection; the majority of her fabrics are made out of soybean.

She may be best known for launching Tory Burch's accessories into super-stardom, but Katherine Fleming is now making a name of her own. With a pedigree from Parsons School of Design, Tory Burch, Polo Ralph Lauren and The Gap, the 29-year-old designer is now striking it hot with her own namesake collection of handbags. Inspired by the colors of Warhol and Hockney as well as the walls from her childhood home in Miami, Florida, her bags are one part retro and one part futuristic. Mixed textures, innovative hardware and trims blend beautifully into her effortlessly chic bags. While the shoulder bags are beautiful, it's her wonderfully detailed clutches that have me drooling! Check out the slideshow for more style or pick one up for yourself at Barneys nationwide and Opening Ceremony in NY & LA.

Details magazine is a true lady€™s mag. What other zine can make Harry Potter look yummy? While Maxim sticks to a predictable T&A formula for their cover, Details throws us chicks a bone by featuring a roster of male hotties. Even the ads feature men who look like dream boat contestants from the game Mystery Date. The fun does not stop there. The articles offer a bird€™s eye view into the world of the modern fashionable man. NYFW Round-Up: Fashion Is All in the Details

After seeing scores of fashion shows over seven days, I'll be honest, all of the clothes start looking the same. Betsey Johnson and Philip Lim looking the same? What am I smoking, right? Unfortunately, nothing. So sometimes its good to take a step back, and then take two steps forward, to see the intricacies that drew you to the designs in the first place. Sometimes its the place where two divergent patterns meet. Sometimes its the intricate interplay of 4-5 separates. Sometimes its a simple shape used in a new way. Sometimes its just indefinably cool. Here then are some of my favorite details from the New York Fashion Week runways.
