New York Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2010: Derek Lam

    image
Ida Hsiang on Sep 14, 2009 4:25 PM PDT
Derek Lam presented his bright and breezy spring 2010 collection on day four of New York Fashion Week. He used bold colors to stimulate the eye and kept silhouettes soft and clean, letting the bright hues take center stage. Bandanna-like neck adornments in contrasting colors gave his simple and laid-back luxe designs a feel of urban-cowboy edge. Derek Lam's designs looked light and comfortable and very feminine with draped tops, fluid lines and high hemlines. Spring variations of current trends could be seen in the vividly hued turquoise and lime green one-pieces (are they risque rompers? A new take on swimsuits?) and the sweetly sophisticated floral garments. It seems like Lam is a little reluctant to let go of the sunny days of summer as many of his pieces had the models looking like a casually chic, retro-inspired women taking a stylish stroll on the beach or boardwalk and has me excited for the spring season! Check out the slideshow to see some favorites from Derek Lam's Spring/Summer 2010 collection at the Mercedes-Benz New York Fashion Week!

Feel Pretty Like Maria With Looks Inspired By West Side ...

Pauline Montupet on Mar 23, 2009 1:21 PM PDT
Everything that€™s old is new again! West Side Story has gone from Broadway to the big screen and now back onstage in 2009. The epic love story set in the 1950s takes us through the journey of two star-crossed lovers, Tony and Maria. They find themselves caught between two rival street gangs of different ethnic backgrounds, the Jets and the Sharks. Get ready for the big revival by getting the ladylike retro looks with a little bit of "cha cha" flair. While you can go the vintage route and get some petticoats and vintage cocktail dresses, there are also plenty of contemporary options that will meld seamlessly with your current wardrobe. Candy colors, nipped-in waists and ruffles help you get a little Latina spring in your step. Try a swingy knee-length dress with a pretty bow clutch and some colorful bangles for a totally Maria-esque look. Scared to go all out? When worn with jeans, a ruffled blouse topped with a colorful cardigan all cinched by a modern belt is a great way to dabble in the look. Still too much? Pair a flared full skirt in a bright color with a simple white tank. Check out the slideshow for some caliente picks and see the musical starting March 19th at the Palace Theatre in NYC!

The Top 5 Little NOT Black Dresses

    image

Awards season has come and gone and were left with a mere memory of gorgeous gowns and gold statuettes. One thing that has been burned in my mind from that evening was that there was nary a black dress in sight! While most of us don€™t have any red carpet moments in our future, we do have plenty of cocktail parties, weddings and birthday parties to attend. Take advice from the stars and ditch basic black to stand out from the crowd. I know it€™s hard to let go of the little black dress, but don€™t fret ladies, I have a plan to help you break out from black! For the true black addicts (myself included!), take a small step to other neutrals; Steel gray, beige and cream can be a pretty option for day or night. Feeling a little bit bolder? Then sequins and shine are for you like this perfect Derek Lam lame dress. Once you have conquered the neutrals and shine you're ready for the last step in look-at-me dressing- bold color! One of Hollywood€™s new favorite (and affordable) brands Black Halo makes great, figure flattering dresses in great colors like cobalt blue and magenta that are sure to get you noticed. So next time you're looking for a little black dress, take a step back and start looking for a little NOT black dress instead. Check out the slideshow for some options.

    Gifts For The Well-Groomed Gentleman

    image

Believe it or not, men do care about grooming. Ask any guy and they will say they use as much "product" as the next guy. Okay, maybe that isn't entirely true, but many men actually care about what they put on their face, body and hair (i.e. "product"). If they don't, then there isn't a better time to start introducing top quality products. A bar of soap may be suitable for most gentlemen, but why not introduce some nice Anthony products into their life or maybe even some Jack Black shampoo to keep their mane nice and shiny? And of course, all men need to shave, so toss those disposable razors and give them something that real gentlemen should have: an Art of Shaving starter kit €“ because every man needs a swanky badger shaving brush in their medicine cabinet. Then there's always the goods provided by our friends at Kiehl's €“ you can never go wrong with them (especially if it comes in a Derek Lam travel kit). Here are some other goods to keep any man well-groomed. Most of them come in handy dandy gift sets €“ perfect for the holidays!

Sophisticated florals are sprouting up everywhere--from dresses, skirts, blouses, even to bags, floral prints are in full-bloom! Collections from Peter Som, Chloe, Derek Lam, just to name a few, all fell in love with florals and perhaps you should too! Bump up a basic by pairing it with a fetch floral blouse like this floral ascot tie top from Twenty8Twelve. Or mix it up by pairing a funky floral print with an animal print scarf or a patterned skirt! No matter how you wear them, feminine florals are sure to find a place in your fall wardrobe.
