  With given constraints of limited raw materials and techniques, the Plywood Chandelier explores the specific affordances of CNC machine processes: the ability to produce exact multiples, perfect slottings and precise geometries. Reverence of the process tempts one to make just a flattened version of a traditional chandelier; this piece resists that by incorporating more stylized organic shapes in its basic structure, examining each component for appropriateness to the finished piece rather than its historical examples. By leaving the plywood unpainted, the piece evokes both the material origins and the formal background.

  Courtney Skott - Map Cabinet

  The Map Cabinet has its origin in my ongoing interest in the aesthetic forms of honeycombs and corrugations, and how those forms are being used in new textiles, constructions and technologies. The cabinet appears as a sliced section of a larger corrugated structure, and functions as one too - the structural integrity of the piece relies not on glue, but rather on the compression of bent plywood pieces slotted into a frame.

  Courtney Skott - Quake Shelves

  The Quake Shelves are inspired by the experience of moving to the Bay Area as an adult, and finding the idea of bolting one's bookshelves to the wall to be a novel concept. Metal brackets affix to the wall and paduk shelves move freely back and forth inside them. The fronts are patterned with a series of holes comprising a map of earthquakes in California for the previous week. Thus each successive shelf will vary slightly in its patterning. A patina finish furthers the feeling of landscape.
