Vintage Fashionistas Savor Gray This Season!

    image
Mary Kincaid on Nov 20, 2009 8:18 AM PST
When searching for vintage clothing online, it's important that you use the right keywords to find what you want. And heaven forbid you're looking for something gray, because well, there's gray (the American spelling) and then there's grey (the British spelling). Of course, since vintage clothing sellers on both sides of the pond spell this color both ways without any sensible rhyme or reason, the wise online vintage shopper knows to plug both spellings into their search engines. If you do, you'll be rewarded with a smorgasbord of vintage treats in this classic, conservative neutral. Try substituting darker charcoal shades of gray for black. Or choose pale shades of gray to take the place of white. Morning, noon or night, for dresses, coats or evening gowns, gray is a fabulous wardrobe choice for a vintage fashionista. Top 10 Fabulous Bustier Dresses That Mix Structure With Sexiness

    image

I don't care what my credit card statement reads -- I say it's never too early to pick out the perfect New Year's Eve dress (unless you plan to really let yourself go at the dinner table this holiday season -- yikes)! What I'm really loving for the cocktail party season ahead is bustier dresses -- a little reminiscent of Madonna's "Like A Virgin" days (in a cool way, of course), yet updated with more subtle hidden boning, chiffon layers, and fun florals and lace. Bustiers juxtapose conservative structure with a snug fit that without revealing too much, yet unlike an old-fashioned corset, you can actually breathe. Blur the lines between girly and edgy with this studded belt bustier from Forever 21, or go full-on flirty with this floaty strapless sheath by Donna Morgan. Browse through the slideshow for a selection of my favorite 10 bustier dresses!

New York Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2010: Zac Posen

Despite being moved from his usual prime-time spot in Bryant Park's main tent, Zac Posen's Spring/Summer 2010 show hardly suffered in the slightly quieter Altman Building -- even at 9 in the morning. His assortment of party frocks (with a couple relaxed pantsuits thrown into the mix) seemed even more youthful and fun in the building's less stuffy surroundings, and with the collection's refreshing prints and energetic color combinations -- lime with fuchsia, lemon yellow with salmon pink -- Posen couldn't have started the morning off on a livelier note! While the designer is always expected to show off a gaggle of fun cocktail dresses every season, this particular selection somehow seemed especially modern and unique -- maybe due to its overall futuristic stewardess/Judy Jetson vibe. And to amp up the flirt factor, he even embellished certain ensembles with metallic lip print cut-outs, a detail that served like a cherry on top of a super-chic sundae. Take a gander at the slideshow for a peek at the collection!

New York Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2010: Ports 1961

For the Spring 2010 Ports 1961 collection, designer Tia Cibani found inspiration in the beauty of nature and as such, she presented an absolutely breathtaking collection. The color palette was mostly muted and comprised of soft airy shades, with the occasional pop of color thrown in, like the standout cherry organza layered sheath. To keep things on the clean and minimal side, embellishments were kept discreet, instead focusing heavily on construction and silhouette over anything else. Some of the pieces were very voluminous but in a way that was still wearable and not too overwhelming, while others were cinched at the waist for a sexier, more defined silhouette. The draping, tucking, and folding were so incredible, even someone with no knowledge of fashion whatsoever would be awed. Some of my absolute favorites included the talc marble wrap dress, a brushstroke silk satin sheath dress with a draped back (definitely a versatile piece which can be worn with a blazer for day and sexy shoes and lots of accessories for night),, and a muted tank dres that was so simple yet stunning. From the bustier cocktail frocks to the organza blazers to the draped skirts, each and every single piece in this collection was simply phenomenal. Flip through the slideshow to see some of the pieces in action.

What to Wear: After Work Cocktails!

    image
kate napleton on Jun 10, 2009 2:23 PM PDT
Your co-workers make a plan to go out for drinks after work later in the week to celebrate finishing the most recent big project. Fun! There are a couple key rules for these events: 1) don't drink like a frat boy and 2) don't show too much skin! It's important to maintain a professional demeanor, but still, looking cute and fun for your night out is a must! You'll need an outfit that can transition with just a few quick accessory changes. For instance, if you start with the BR Monogram Collection tulip dress with a sweater for day, then you can easily do a shoe change for heels and make it a classy evening look. Ditch your day purse for a cute and shiny clutch like this Nordstrom square stone silk clutch. If all else fails, just switch your work-appropriate shoes for some sassy wedges like these wave pattern wedges from Anthropologie! Check out my slideshow for other after-work cocktail looks!

The Tadashi Shoji Fall 2009 collection brought an array of beyond stunning cocktail frocks from the sleek and subdued to the jaw-dropping and impossible to ignore. For those who wanna go bold, there were styles that were beautifully cut and shaped in eye-catching shades- organza styles with sculpted sleeves, cascade-front dresses in floral prints, satin frocks that gently draped around the neckline, mini dresses that were precisely folded and tiered, halter styles, tulip dresses, and so much more. For the party girl who likes to keep it classic, there were plenty of gorgeous LBD's to choose from- silk taffeta with a cascading front, a cascading ribbon dress, a striking beaded style, a strapless sculpted number and more. For a more formal occasion, there were several gorgeous gowns to chose from including a printed silk georgette pleated halter, a black draped gown, and silk organza strapless gown. This collection was pretty much all about the dresses, but several separates were also thrown into the mix- a black tulip skirt, a plated brocade style, skinny pants, some ruffled blouses, and a gorgeous black brocade jacket. Overall, this collection definitely brought a modern, romantic twist to classic cocktail attire with gorgeous pieces that will never be outdated.
