And it seems that a high percentage of the people whose dwellings are featured in its pages are designers of some sort. When they aren’t, it’s a riddle: how do a journalist and a nonprofit arts administrator afford a home in Bernal Heights? A lot of these apartments are tied to historical periods through the elements of their interior design. Just as important as being inspired by seeing how other people decorate their homes is the desire to make something new, and it’s a desire that the book stokes through its insistence on established styles and familiar eclecticism.

  The Pillow Book: Over 25 Simple-to-Sew Patterns for

  Pillows play a huge role in my comfort at home. I have a rocking chair I can’t sit in unless there’s a bolster for my lower back; likewise, my bed requires huge pillows propped up against my makeshift headboard before I can settle in for a good read. It’s a bonus, then, to leaf through this book and realize how much more can be done with them. I’m particularly taken by the overlapping synthetic-suede mermaid pillow, which looks not unlike a fantastical reptile, and the big, soft knit pillows make me warm just looking at them.

  Factory Records: The Complete Graphic Album $35.00 :

  There are already two movies making most of the points I'd like to make about why this book is amazing. But I would like to say that Factory records/Peter Saville/Tony Wilson/et al. started from very similar source materials to Malcolm Mclaren and his Sex Pistols, but ended up with something entirely distinct. People are still scrambling to catch up with the way that FR did business, and the instant iconicity of everything they did -- which, paradoxically, came from a desire to be iconoclastic -- is on full display here.

  There are big names and unknowns in this book, and I have favorites in each category. What's illuminating is how far removed these illustrations are from technical drawings. Sonia Rykiel's drawings are particularly interesting because they almost look like chinese calligraphy -- and yet they give a perfect sense of how a garment is supposed to hit the eye.

  Living Colors: The Definitive Guide to Color Palettes

  This book isn’t about the TV show In Living Color. Sorry if you were mistaken. Take a moment and hear me out, though: this is a deceptive book in other ways, too. It’s historical, an overview of how color palettes have changed over time and how they reflect their historical moment, but it’s also inspiring like more design-oriented tomes are. Some of the book covers things like an art history textbook might, but there are all sorts of unexpected interruptions from other spheres of culture: Comme des Garçons designer Rei Kawabuko shares pages with bakelite and Spiderman.

  Legacy of the Cat: $22.95 : Chronicle Books

  The title sort of says it all. I spent almost 30 minutes losing myself in this book when I should have been describing it for my wishlist. Partly amusing because cats almost never photograph well — the best photos here are the ones where the cat seems to be caught between curiosity and utter terror — but mostly engrossing as a serious, but not too-serious reference for anyone interested in the varieties of these domestic beasts. We might inhabit the same homes as these creatures, but know relatively little about their history and characteristics. Somehow the descriptions here reveal as much about humans as they do about cats.

  L. A. Lofts: $50.00 : Chronicle Books

  Lofts are synonymous with gentrification, so it’s natural to want to pour scorn on the phenomenon. This book won’t address your burning sociological questions; it celebrates instead the idea of L.A., and exploring a certain group of Angelenos’ self-perception in the process. It’s unlikely you or I will ever be able to afford the interiors portrayed here, but Dominique Vorillon’s photographs do a more-than-capable job of capturing what in these spaces is fun to dream about. L.A. Lofts also serves a more practical function as a source of inspiration for decorating your own place.
