Halloween Costume Ideas For $20 Or Less!

    image
Ida Hsiang on Oct 29, 2009 10:20 AM PDT
So unless you've been living under a rock, or have holed yourself up in a dark room, I'm sure you've noticed by now that it is pretty much Halloween. It's this Saturday and maybe you've been thinking about finding something cool to go as or just finding any costume, really, so you can join in on the Halloween spirit and festivities. But what about that bank account? Halloween is still a great deal of fun for any age, but now that you understand the value of a dollar more than you did when you were five, you realize that blowing upwards of three figures for one night that you'll remember through a haze is not that a great of an idea. Your rent is due soon, there's that bill you really can't put off anymore and the Holiday season is fast approaching as well. Have no fear (except for those ghosts and goblins that'll be roaming around in a few days), because after doing extensive searching and bargaining hunting, I've found quite a few Halloween accessories that are easy on the pocketbook and, when added to clothing and accessories that you and your friends already have, make a great costume for cheap! Click on the slideshow to see some great Halloween costume ideas that'll leave enough money in your wallet to buy your own Halloween treats!

College Candy Presents 8 Under $20: Old Navy!

For many of you, school has already begun or will shortly, which means new additions to the wardrobe are necessary. Woohoo! But you don't have to spend a lot to update that 2008 fall wardrobe. Old Navy is a great place to get cute basics at super reasonable prices. Just pair these items (many of which are on sale!) with the trendier items/accessories in your closet for a brand new look. Here are a few pieces I found that'll be great for the upcoming months:

Jeans: Jeans are obviously a wardrobe staple in every college girl's closet, but sometimes we need a little variety. I say that every gal needs a cute pair of khakis. You can wear them with a polo, a basic button down or a tee. I totally love the green of these ones. They're a little different, but still totally neutral so you can wear them with just about anything!

Cute Tops: I'm really digging the cut and print of this shirt (though they also have it in solid colors if print's not your thang). But what I really heart about this tank is that you can wear it on its own before it gets too cool and also rock it under a boyfriend blazer for those chillier days.

Our Favorite Mini Skirts For Mini Budgets

Hemlines are getting shorter, but so is the distance that my dollar will go! I love mini skirts because they're sexy and feminine and make legs look a million miles long. High-waisted minis are a sophisticated spin on a classic, and micro-minis flaunt it with no apologies. Crazy patterns and eye-popping colors make a unique statement while denim versions are youthful and classic. Mini skirts are not only totally hot and super femme, but they're also incredibly versatile. Throw on a casual tee and some cute flats or sandals for a laid back, girl-next-door feel, or vamp it up with a daring top and sexy stilettos and watch those heads turn! Worried about the cooler weather coming your way? A pair of opaque tights or funky leggings are all you need. Be a real trendsetter and pair it with sexy thigh-high socks and a sweater for added warmth! With all these great mini skirts to choose from and the endless possibilities of mix and matching, it's hard to choose just one to add to your repertoire. Check out the slideshow to see some minis that are easy on the eye and even easier on the wallet!

The Budget Stylista: Don't Be Fooled by the Rocks That I Got!

Jewelry can make or break an outfit. This is fact. It's a great way to spice up your usual uniform (jeans, black v-neck, black flats - I know it all too well), assuming, of course, that you don't go overboard and look like you went shopping in your grandma's closet (tchotchke heaven). This season there is no better way to reinvent some old pieces in your wardrobe than by adding some bling bling. Right now jewelry is big, it's bold, it's bedazzled, jeweled and animal printed. It's also ridiculously overpriced at so many places. But those aren't the places you are going to be shopping, because it is so easy to find pieces for cheap that look like they belong in J.Lo's closet. Read: bling blingin' on the cheap cheapin'. So before you go spending $150 on a necklace you claim will give you seasons of love, come to terms with the fact that in 12 months time, you will more likely than not have moved on out - Jeffersons style - to something that's a lot less animal printed. So why spend $150 when you can get the same bangin' look for $15? Yeah, I thought so. Want to see more blingin' budget jewelry? Click over to our friends at College Candy!

Now matter how often you tell yourself that you absolutely need to officially act on that saving money kick you've been ambitiously planning for months, somehow by the end of the week you find yourself deeper in the hole than you hoped. Even when you try to behave financially and opt for a thrifty Happy Hour in place of your more extravagant night-out plans, somehow your wallet comes home empty by the end of the evening! So if over-spending is inevitable once you step foot out of the house, is the only solution to simply lock yourself up in your house and count the tiles in your ceiling? No way! Sure, desperate times call for desperate measures, but life as a hermit is never the answer! Believe it or not, plenty of fun can be had right under your own roof, especially when you involve the right company! From do-it-yourself photoshoots, movie marathons, and a homemade potluck dinner, you may not have fun for free exactly, but you'll definitely save money and gas while staying comfy and getting the chance to tap into your creative side, too! Smart Shopper: Not Everything Is Cheaper In The Drugstore ...

    image
Alex Gambardella on Mar 6, 2009 7:17 AM PST
I know times are tough and money is tight, and I must applaud you hivers that have been cutting back on your shopping sprees and behaving yourself in the face of tempting designer labels and reduced (but still pricey!) price tags. And although I admire self-discipline and thriftiness, many inexperienced yet determined smart shoppers aren't always the most well-informed, and in their attempt to take better care of their cash flow will sacrifice quality to save a few cents, fall for disguised deals that really just put them further into debt, and overall just end up not getting the real bang for their buck. One of the biggest frugal faux pas when it comes to shopping is the idea that drugstore makeup is the way to save. True, drugstores, mainly Walgreens and Rite Aid, carry loads of great brands for even greater prices, all conveniently in the same adjacent aisles for easy browsing and comparison, and don't get me wrong -- I'm all about the thrifty beauty finds, especially given all the products I compulsively buy on a regular basis. With that in mind, I know by experience as a makeup junkie that not all drugstore brands are a save, especially when it comes to quality. For example, ninety-nine cent eyeliner is a great idea in theory, but have you actually tried skidding it across your lids? And on the opposite end of the spectrum, while many L'Oreal products are on the high end of cosmetics aisle quality, have you checked out the price tag? Some of the products look beautiful but aren't a bargain in the least, more than breaking the $10 barrier and verging into high-end line prices. While this might seem like I'm just trying to depress you, or perhaps just discourage you enough to throw your financial saving out the window and succumb to your inner shopaholic like me, I assure you, it's not all bad news! The point to all this drugstore myth-busting is that smart beauty shopping doesn't mean you must limit yourself to Longs when it comes to buying makeup, especially with climbing product costs -- In fact, Sephora carries plenty of affordable brands (and not-so-affordable ones that go on sale!) that rival and even beat drugstore prices, and often provide better quality when it comes to beauty basics that you shouldn't skimp on. Check out the slideshow for some of the the priciest drugstore products exposed, matched with rival cheaper products from more upscale lines found at Sephora!
