Be One With The Woodsmen And Warm Up In A Trapper Hat!

    image
Alex Gambardella on Nov 23, 2009 10:19 AM PST
I'm not gonna lie -- while the cozy cable knits and warm faux fur of a basic trendy trapper hat look too comfy to pass up, this winter's hottest accessory isn't necessarily for everyone. It takes a certain winter style to pull off this bundled-up woodsy look, especially since it can easily bring to mind childhood memories of getting wrapped up like a Christmas present every time you wanted to play outside. The key is to not take the trend too seriously -- treat trapper hats like a casually thrown-on accessory, instead of a frostbite-killing survival tactic. When added to a full-on set of snow gear, the look is a little more functionally overboard than fashionable, but with just a thermal and a pair of rosy cheeks the look is cute without looking costume-y or childish. Browse through the slideshow for a festive bunch of my favorite trapper hats!

These Platform Pumps Make It Chic To Be Square!

Pointed, rounded, almond, peep toe... you may think you've got your bases covered when it comes to shoe shopping, but there's a new style on the block that's ready to take over. Square toe platform pumps are popping up everywhere lately -- designer and bargain brands alike -- and are bringing that ballerina-inspired pointe shoe look to the style scene. The flattened toe provides a vintage feel, especially if you go Mad Men style with a pencil skirt, while the platform gives the look a modern edge. Be careful when indulging in this trend, though -- if you're looking to elongate your legs, you might not want to throw out all your pointed pumps and replace them with their snubbed-toe counterpart! However, all you leggy girls can lust after the trend without fear! Of course, your credit card may have reason to fret if you go overboard... check the slideshow to see a selection of hot square-toed platforms!

Top 10 Fabulous Bustier Dresses That Mix Structure With Sexiness

I don't care what my credit card statement reads -- I say it's never too early to pick out the perfect New Year's Eve dress (unless you plan to really let yourself go at the dinner table this holiday season -- yikes)! What I'm really loving for the cocktail party season ahead is bustier dresses -- a little reminiscent of Madonna's "Like A Virgin" days (in a cool way, of course), yet updated with more subtle hidden boning, chiffon layers, and fun florals and lace. Bustiers juxtapose conservative structure with a snug fit that without revealing too much, yet unlike an old-fashioned corset, you can actually breathe. Blur the lines between girly and edgy with this studded belt bustier from Forever 21, or go full-on flirty with this floaty strapless sheath by Donna Morgan. Browse through the slideshow for a selection of my favorite 10 bustier dresses!

Get Sophisticated In Peplum Skirts And Dresses

What do Fergie, Lily Allen, and Rihanna all have in common (besides being famously popular singers)? They've been seen wearing peplum dresses and skirts! If you don't know what a peplum is, it's an addition of a short skirt-like panel over the waist on a dress or skirt. Reminiscent of Dior's "New Look" and also of '80s style, peplum dresses and skirts are feminine looks that accentuate hourglass figures. These days, the peplum combines the best of the retro sensibilities of the '40s along with the youthful exuberance of the '80s. Urban Outfitters gives us a taste of the 80s look with their Tribal Print Peplum Skirt made of one of a kind vintage fabrics. For a more classic look, turn to the Alice + Olivia Multi Gather Peplum Dress in a beautiful red satin that will be sure to turn heads at holiday parties. Take a peek at my slideshow for more peplum skirts and dresses!

Video Style Steal: Alicia Keys Is Sad But Sultry In "Doesn't ...

    image

Alicia Keys has quite a lot of success under her belt for a woman at 28 (but then again, what else would you expect from a girl who was accepted into Columbia when she was 16?), with her shelf full of Grammy awards and four chart-topping studio albums. Aside from her musical growth (and ascending movie career), we've also seen quite a progression in her hairdo -- from neat braids to unruly curls and now sleek and straight in her latest video, "Doesn't Mean Anything." But her hair isn't the only thing that's polished and chic. In a sparkly tunic, Alicia is classy as usual, and while she may be mournful and lonely in the video, I know I'd be much more cheerful if I had a hot pair of stiletto boots like hers! Check the slideshow to see some Alicia-inspired looks from her latest hit vid.

Rock Out Like Rihanna For Halloween!

    image

This Halloween, I thought our favorite Barbadian songstress Rihanna would be a great inspiration for a costume. What better time to unleash the diva in you and get adventurous with your clothing? Rihanna is always wearing something experimental, fashion forward and never cookie cutter. My costume inspiration for Rihanna is from a tour she did last year which is a little less daring than her current outfits, but you'll be surprised at how many pieces of clothing that's already in your closet you can use! Start off with a shiny silver bustier or corset like the one I found from Charlotte Russe. Add a pair of liquid leggings or faux leather pants, leather boots, black fingerless gloves and a few chunky silver cuffs and you're set! If you don't have Rihanna's signature sleek short black hair, grab a wig and style it appropriately. Take a peek at my slideshow to see how you can become Rihanna (without all the drama, of course). Best part is, nothing in my slideshow is over $50! Photo credit: PR Photos
