Back To The Classics: Our Top Five Designer Handbags

    image
Pauline Montupet on июн 18, 2009 10:22 AM PDT
It seems that after many seasons of excess and "it" bags, the fashion industry has come back to reality. It might be the sobering effects of the economic downturn that's making us look towards the classics. Then again, most of us could never actually afford a new designer bag each season to begin with. So instead of using your tax return on a few trendy items that will make you wonder why the heck you bought them come the next season, put your money into something that will last. Classic handbags never go out of season and look good with nearly every outfit. Yes, they may cost quite a lot of money, but these top designer bags are impeccably made and will last you nearly a lifetime. Don't believe me? I have an old Chanel purse from my grandmother to prove it. The Chanel 2.55 bag is the traditional flap bag. It was first introduced in February 1955 by the ever-practical Coco Chanel, who wanted a hands-free bag with a shoulder strap. The 2.55 comes in one size only, but it's the perfect size, small enough for evening, yet big enough to also use during the day. With its classic shape and iconic status, the Hermes Birkin bag is the holy grail of handbags. The wait list may have died down since its feature on "Sex and the City", but if you don't want to wait or pay full price, eBay and Portero.com are great places to look for them second-hand. No one can argue that the Louis Vuitton Speedy is a classic-- it has been Louis Vuitton's best selling bag since Audrey Hepburn made it popular. Get it in the black or colored Epi leather to avoid getting sick of the logo. Some newer additions to the classic bag line up are the Yves Saint Laurent Muse bag and the Bottega Veneta Intrecciato bags. The Muse was introduced in 2006 and has been a bestseller ever since. The Intrecciato bag from Bottega, otherwise known as the woven bag, is buttery soft, beautifully made, and has become an instant classic, with has a slightly lower price tag than some of the other investment bags. Emma Watson Trades Hogwarts For Burberry

All I can say is WOW after looking at the new Emma Watson ads for Burberry. Photographed by Mario Testino, the 19 year-old Emma (aka Hermione Granger in the "Harry Potter" flicks) looks all grown up and oh so stylish as the new face of the British fashion house. She's definitely come a long way from the bushy haired character she's plays! It comes to no surprise that she's landed a major campaign like this, but after months of speculation and many photo ops with Karl Lagerfeld, many were hoping she'd be the face of Chanel instead. Nonetheless, Emma wears the classic Burberry tartan plaid and trench coats like any seasoned fashion pro. See more photos at the UK's Daily Mail. Marion Cotillard Proves Looks Can Kill With The Lady Dior Bag ...

Move over, Audrey Tautou for Chanel -- couture cinema is a hot trend in the advertising world, and Marion Cotillard (along with her covetable collection of Dior accessories) is the new face of these fashionable mini-films. Reunited with La Vie en Rose director Olivier Dahan, the dynamic duo seeks to make movie magic not for the sake of Oscar glory this time around, but for dramatizing Dior's Lady Dior collection with a series of four mysteriously chic Film Noir-inspired installments. The first mini-film, "Lady Noire" includes all the best aspects of a good film noir flick from the muted colors to its fashionable femme fatale and slew of ridiculously well-dressed thugs -- in fact, I have to admit I spent more time checking out the killer designer loot than attempting to follow its sly storyline. Check out the trailer below, then watch the full mini-film at the official Lady Dior site to get hooked on the four-part saga. If you're really intrigued, you can even follow Lady Dior on Twitter for clues on cracking the case and news on the next upcoming installments!

Necessary Luxuries: Beauty Products Worth the Bank!

These days, more than ever, it's important to be smart with your hard-earned money. Frankly, it's rather unfashionable to go drop serious dough at Barney's and walk out with several thousand dollars of clothing that won't be in style next season. However, when it comes to beauty products, some investments are worth it. Of course, keeping your face, hair and nails well-coiffed never goes out of style. I've compiled some of my favorite pricier beauty products for your investment consideration. At the top of my list is Chanel's Precision Gommage Microperle Eclat, which is a finely beaded exfoliating gel that leaves your face smooth and smelling like roses. What's more, if you use just a dollop once or twice a week, the $45 tube can last you a year. As long as we're talking Chanel, have you tried their Nail Vernis colors? I know $23 seems like a lot for nail polish, but it goes on smooth and lasts a long time, with a nice shiny finish. One of my daily favorites is Philosophy's Hope in a Jar Moisturizer, which is an extremely lightweight, oil-free, hydrating moisturizer. Ranging from $15 for half an ounce to $60 for four ounces, it ain't cheap, but let's just say seeing is believing with that product. Check out my slideshow for other necessary beauty luxuries!
