Emiko Oki designs some of the most clever products! Recently, I reviewed the pint glass that she created, and this product is of a similar theme. It’s called Trophy Tableware because Emiko takes the coffee pot, bowl, cup, saucer, and so on, and creates a groove in the ceramics with which the user can stack the pieces to make a grand trophy. I find it to be similar to the pint glass in that the implied silhouette of the piece makes the piece. Everything is left simple and unadorned. I must admit I was daydreaming of what this piece might look like with some sort of baroque applied design, but it’s simplicity is probably its strength as well.

These are two young designers who’s names I cannot pronounce but whose design concepts I immediately get. Both Tuukka Tujula and Maija Puoskari are members of the design collective JuJu Design Party, a Finnish group with a massive amount of talent. I’ll be featuring a number of designs and concept from their collective in the next few weeks, but today I start with the Snow Print Ceramic Tile. What I love about this is the funny scenario I’ve concocted for this happy accident. Imagine the designers in their studio making ceramic tiles when their dog walks in a steps on their freshly made work! Damn. Tile ruined… wait a sec. Glaze the tiles pure white and the paw prints look like freshly tread snow. Ah! The hard ceramic instantly becomes dematerialized into soft. pure snow. Is it a happy accident? The only thing I find weird about the concept are the tiles ability to collect fuzz balls in those little paw prints. Not the most functional tile, I’d think, but beautiful none the less.

Smoke Like a Chimney is one of those one in a million ideas that inspire me to practice design. It’s a high concept ashtray made in white porcelain. Here’s the concept: the ashtray has a cover over where the cigarette is placed. This cover is an abstracted version of a human lung. When the cigarette is placed in the ashtray smoke rises up and pours out of the end of the abstracted lung tubes always reminding the user of just how much smoke is rising through his or her lungs. So the piece really succeeds on several levels. Not only is at beautiful piece of porcelain showing strong technical prowess, but it’s also an affective demonstration of the beauty of smoke…or the perils of smoking.

Sometimes I wonder how it’s possible that I’m able to feature two lung ashtrays in such a short period of time. The first lung ashtray I saw was by an extremely adept Italian design firm called industreal with their smoke like a chimney ashtray. Now, here I am with a lung ashtray by Finding Cheska. I’m not sure what my obsession with lung ashtrays is, but I am a smoker in my mid-thirties with a family. I really only have maybe one a day, but cigarettes still linger in my consciousness.

I have a couple of friends here in San Francisco who are serious foodies. Every couple of weeks my wife and I walk the three blocks to their house to partake in what might be called a food orgy. My friends call this dinner, but to me it’s way more opulent than that. The dinner usually starts out with a number of small courses, each of which is displayed on a separate plate which, most times, don’t match. I don’t really care if the plates don’t match, but when I saw these plates by Voon and Benson I knew that my friends’ meals could be taken up a notch. The Molecule plates are the perfect addition to their already seductive meal bringing the dinner’s potential into the realm of fuzzy dream. The only problem I suspect that they may have with the plates are simply washing and storing them. Cabinet space is precious in San Francisco to begin with, so these plates may fare well in far off suburbs where kitchens are cavernous palaces.
