How Well Do You Know Your Hats?

I have a reasonable arsenal of hats in my wardrobe. Actually, I only rotate two of them: a black Fred Perry newsboy cap and a slouchy khaki driver's cap from H&M. With hats being such a hot commodity (and a nice Christmas gift) with hipsters and fashionistas alike, there is a happy myriad of styles that are hard to differentiate. Sure, there is the run-of-the-mill cap, but what about all those other ones? What makes my newsboy cap different from a driver's cap? Does Justin Timberlake have an affinity for fedoras or trilbies? Is a bowler strictly worn by bowlers or is it Charlie Chaplin's signature hat? Is a porkpie a diner delicacy or a jazzy head topper? And what exactly is a Panama hat? Instead of trying to go into the details of the different kind of hats that are spreading like wildfire throughout the fashion world, go to the slideshow for a pictorial glossary.

The Rebellious Charm of Motorcycle-Centric Fashion

The first time I saw Marlon Brando in The Wild One, my sartorial radar honed in on his motorcycle-chic garb €“ the leather jacket, the "don't mess with me" cap cocked to the side €“ it painted a picture of an iconic look. Then, in Indiana Jones And The Kingdom Of The Crystal Skull Hollywood's "it" boy, Shia LeBeouf reincarnated the look as the rebellious character of Mutt, Indy's estranged son (sorry if I spoiled the movie for you, but if you haven't seen it yet €“ where have you been?). This brings us to the world of fashion, which is seeing grommet-infused jeans, streamlined motorcycle-inspired jackets, hardware heavy accessories and romper stomper boots fit to kick some major ass. Combine the garments found in my SLIDESHOW for a look that gives off a modern, cool motorcycle dude impression and strays away from that leather daddy look.

    Getting "Tweedy" With It

The leaves are starting to turn shades of brown and weather is starting to cool. You know what that means €“ it's time to bust out the tweed. It's manly. It's stylish. It's classic. The fabric's autumnal appeal is the perfect material to don during the chillier parts of the season and well into winter. The chivalrous fabric evokes scenes of Englishmen hunting on the countryside, but that doesn't mean you have to mount a horse and shoot some elk. It also doesn't necessarily have to be worn in blazer form. From Converse sneakers to newsboy caps, take a look at my SLIDESHOW for tweed items fit for the modern man. Just don't overdo it. You might end up looking like an upholstered couch in the den of an uptight college professor at Oxford. And P.S. €“ Ralph Lauren Rugby seems to be the front runner when it comes to tweedy necessities.
