New York Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2010: Michael Kors

    image
Alex Gambardella on сен 22, 2009 7:17 AM PDT
If you've been going through Michael Kors withdrawals due to his erratic attendance record on the latest Project Runway season's judging panel, you may be happy to see that he's more than making up for it at his "day job." The designer's Spring/Summer 2010 collection focused on architectural shapes and his own modern play on the power suit, boasting a number of patterned three-piece ensembles and updated shift dresses for today's business bigwigs. While still managing to keep his classic ready-to-wear silhouettes, Kors strayed slightly from his signature understated elegance and threw in some bold cut-outs, edgy plastic insets, and a variety of metallic and splatter paint patterns one might not typically see in the straight-laced business world. Take a look at the slideshow for some of the runway highlights!

Color Palette: white, black, soft grey, lavender, sky blue
Trends: sleeveless shift dresses, plastic insets, cut-outs, zipper accents, one-shoulder minis

Lemondrop's Top 12 Things You Should Never Wear to the Office!

    image
Ida Hsiang on авг 3, 2009 5:18 AM PDT
We all know it can be tricky to judge what constitutes appropriate work attire. (See old episodes of "Ally McBeal" for reference.) We like to use a version of the expensive-meal rule: Just like you can't afford something if you have to ask how much it costs, if you're not sure whether you can pull off a work look, you probably shouldn't risk it. While shiny gold lame leggings might constitute "power dressing" at American Apparel, in general you should steer clear of these office dress-code violations -- especially number one on our list.

    12. Leggings
If you're cold, wear tights. If your dress is too short, put it back in the closet. If you don't feel like wearing pants, well ... tough. Leggings lack the polish and professionalism of standard work slacks or a nice pair of Wolford tights. Toss in the fact that they're generally unflattering (hello, cankles!) and make you look like you're headed to a Jazzercize class, and you're better off calling in sick.

    11. Boobs
OK, we get it. You've got a mind for business and a body for sin. But trying to emphasize the latter in a revealing tube top or strapless dress could backfire. "If you show too much cleavage, people will not take you seriously," says Atlanta-based image consultant Peggy M. Parks of The Parks Image Group. "You always want to bring attention to your face so people will look at your eyes and listen to what your mouth says without being distracted on the way up. You need to dress professionally to show that you are there for business and you mean business."

    10. Shorts
First, ask yourself this: Do I work at Hooters? If the answer is no, step away from the booty shorts and flesh-toned tights. Shorts don't scream "corporate titan." And no, we don't care how hot it is outside. That's why God created air conditioning.

    Rumor: Uniqlo Taking Over Gap?

    image

It's no secret that the Gap has been struggling in recent years to keep up profits and keep the attention of buyers. The denim giant may be doing worse than we thought because rumors have begun circulating that Uniqlo is considering purchasing the business. While at first this takeover would seem unlikely (Uniqlo's presence in the United States is nowhere near as strong as the Gap's), Uniqlo actually comes from a rather strong empire called Fast Retail, founded in 1984 by Tadashi Yanai. Yanai reportedly has been looking for new ways to break into the American fashion market. So what would a Gap under Uniqlo regime look like? We have to admit that we'd be interested to find out.

Gotta Getaway? Experience Movie Magic At Hotel Bijou In San ...

San Francisco is truly an international city with a large variety of places, things and events to offer. The people and city are interesting and diverse, ranging from unique to downright strange! My cousin recently flew in to visit me and discovered a quaint hotel that leans towards the unique side more than the downright strange side. The Hotel Bijou is located in the heart of Union Square and although the rooms are cozy, I ended up staying with her for 2 nights instead of going back to my own place. The theme is that of San Francisco movie magic. San Francisco is a city rich with culture and beauty which makes it an ideal place for film locations with classics like Vertigo and Basic Instinct on the list. Each adequately sized room is clean and kempt and named after a movie that has taken place in San Francisco. Still-frames of the specific movie decorate the rooms and other movie photos and paraphernalia are showcased in the hallways. The lobby resembles an old theater and furniture is European and comfortable with an antique feel. There is even a mini-theater complete with velvet curtains and plush red seats to the side of the lobby that shows double-features on a nightly basis. All the films shown are based in San Francisco, of course! The concierge is friendly and helpful and there is an unlimited supply of single serving raw almond packets that you can grab either on your way up to your room, or as a snack for later when you're exploring the city. The location is ideal and after watching San Francisco-based films, you'll be inspired to explore the city even more! There are numerous restaurants and eateries nearby, ranging in cuisine from fast-food burgers to Indian delicacies, as well as the huge Westfield mall. Other stores and boutiques are within walking distance, as well as a cable car stop and MUNI and Bart stations. So whether you're making a stop in San Francisco for business and pleasure, be sure to check out the Hotel Bijou for a comfortable, affordable and unique experience! Corsets, Not Just For The Bedroom!

    image

Women want to look sexy. Elegant... and sexy. Sophisticated... and sexy. It doesn't matter what your style is, or what you are trying to convey through your clothing-- the bottom line is that you can always work a little something sexy into your look. The uniform for instant sexy would have to be corsets and bustiers. They were used in the 1800's because they gave women such a great shape. An uncomfortable one, but a great one. 1950's pin-ups are always shown in corsets, lacy satins and fishnets. They are the epitome of female sexiness. That's wonderful and all, but outside the bedroom and Halloween, where is it ever appropriate to don a skin-tight, laced-up, lacy, bosom-baring satin top? Nowhere, frankly. But now you can get the look and image of sexiness that corsets give, but still be comfortable and day appropriate. Where them under a cardigan and a great pair of jeans for a sexy and sweet weekend get-up, or under a blazer and with some great heels to add spark to the work place! School, work or meeting the boyfriend's parents, check out the slideshow for some great ideas that will leave you looking sexy but appropriate for anything that may come along in your busy day.
