DIYthing's Favorite Designers From The 2009 BKLYN DESIGN Show

    image

Have you been reading 3Rings lately? This design blog has a host of reviews about the recent exhibitors at the May 2009 BKLYN DESIGN Show in Dumbo. There are lots of great interviews and videos as well. There's even a piece highlighting one of our favorite Brooklyn designers, Daniel Moyer of Daniel Moyer Designs. 3Rings offers reviews of a range of product designers, from Warp Designs' Perforated Steel Vases to the delicate lamps of Levent and Romme. We really love the many designers who are using green design principles - check out the fun bamboo plywood furniture from Boo-Coup. Alicita Rodriquez introduced us to two great wallpaper designers - Shanan Campanaro and Jill Malek. Campanaro's Eskayel line is based on her original artwork. And, Alicita, we agree, Jill Malek's hand-screen printed wallcoverings are enough to make one swoon. Check out our slideshow to see some of our other favs.

The Cast Of "Gossip Girl" Loves I Love Factory Headbands!

The high school queen bees on "Gossip Girl" are rarely seen without an of-the-moment headband. Their fashionable headgear ranges from ultra basic to extraordinary and have started a headband movement all over the world. Looking for something beyond the usual leather or tortoiseshell band? Look no further than I Love Factory with their modern twist on millinery with hand-sewn, fashion forward headgear that even the Gossip Girl herself would love. Started by Laurel St. Romain and Christopher Garbushian, the pair makes the entire collection by hand in their Brooklyn studio. The current "Parklife Society" collection includes 12 pieces, all in black and ivory made from leather, satin, taffeta and guinea hen feathers. They're perfect for adding a little whimsy to any outfit day or a new twist to that little black dress you've been wearing to every cocktail party and rehearsal dinner since 2002. Check out the entire collection at ilovefactorybk.com!

Agyness Deyn And MGMT Spotted Wearing Jewish Rosaries from ...

You don't need to be a Torah-toter to love Jewish rosaries. These religion-inspired beads have been popping up on cool kids everywhere (including their fearless leaders Agyness Deyn and the boys from MGMT). The (JEW)elery collection was started by Carlen Altman in her Brooklyn, NY, studio when she was inspired by vintage Catholic rosaries. As a nice little Jewish girl in BK, she couldn't bring herself to wear a cross; hence the birth of Jewish rosaries. Each necklace is adorned with shapes like Stars of David, Hamsa hands and menorah charms. You can choose from an array of styles with names like "Chai Maintenance" for the discerning Jewess or Shiksa, or just a simple one from the "Classic" collection with a Star of David. These unusual necklaces come in both gold and silver with your choice of colored beads (personally I think the Jet shade has a great 80's Madonna feel to it). The most recent collection comes in red, black, and even in-glow-in-the-dark (coolest thing ever!!). These are so kitschy and cool, even goyem like me can sport them! Check out the slideshow to see some of the styles and then head over to the Jewish Rosaries site to claim one (or a few) of your own!

Meet Love Brigade, Stylehive's Next Big Thing!

What do Kurt Cobain, ancient Egyptians, and Bob Dylan all have in common? Give up? Well, they were all inspiration behind Brooklyn-based design team Love Brigade! Blending musical influences with up to the minute trends, their Fall '08 collection named "Love Kurt" featured nature motifs and sexy asymmetrical cuts, slits, and straps all without baring too much skin. Not to be outdone, their Spring '09 presentation of their "Ex-Oh" diffusion line was probably one of the most unique out there! The presentation featured models hanging out on hammocks and dining with oversized cutlery rather than strutting down the runway. We got a chance to talk to Creative Director Christopher "Tinypants" Dang about Love Brigade's background and what's next for them. Read on to see what he had to say, and be sure to check out the slideshow for a look at their Fall collection- then watch the video for their newest Spring '09 looks!

Fashionindie Week Brooklyn: Alisha Trimble, For Girls Who ...

Okay, so it wasn't exactly love at first sight- getting there was rough, between puddle-jumping in Miu Mius and having my cab driver leave me in front of a fishy (literally) Chinatown market mid-storm, but my mood brightened once I opened the door to Catherine Slip Studios, where Alisha Trimble's spring/summer 2009 collection was to be presented. Awash in a sea of reds and pinks, models posed while the crowd sipped wine and snapped pics. The collection was overwhelmingly cute in a half "Alice In Wonderland," half menswear-inspired way, with a sprinkling of hearts for good measure. I especially loved the tuxedo-style dresses with multiple misplaced bow ties - it was a fun spin on the 'borrowed from the boys' trend that took hold of so many collections this season. All in all, plenty of cute party dresses for the girl who just wants to have fun.
