Reel to Real: Diane Keaton in "Annie Hall"

    image

Is there anything more quintessentially New York chic than Diane Keaton's wardrobe in Woody Allen's classic ode to love, "Annie Hall?" Trailblazing and iconic, Annie Hall's style was boyfriend before there was boyfriend: mannish trousers, waistcoats, tailored blouses, bowler hats, wingtip oxfords, and oversize blazers created a look that was part English country gentleman, part West Village bohemian. Even more fashion-forward? The look was pretty much Diane Keaton's own creation. According to movie lore, the film's costumer, Nancy McArdle, was at best dubious about how Keaton's look would appeal to moviegoers but at Woody Allen's vehement insistence, Diane's quirky, personal fashion sense was allowed to remain and become Annie's own. McArdle worked closely with another fashion icon, Ralph Lauren, to design the costumes, including Annie's signature polka-dot tie. Thus, fashion inspiration for the ages was born. Annie Hall's continued influence on fashion is seen in many places today, from the trendsetting looks sported by Agyness Deyn, Kate Moss, and Mary-Kate Olsen, to collections by designers such as Marc Jacobs and Boy by Band of Outsiders. Vintage Fashionistas Are Tickled Pink!

Ah, pink! It's a color associated with Mattel's Barbies, Mary Kay's cadillacs and little girls everywhere. But did you know that between the 1920s and 1940s, it was blue that was considered dainty and delicate and appropriate for girls and that pink was considered to be the more masculine color appropriate for boys! Sometime in the 1940s, societal norms shifted and now pink is back and bigger than ever! Neiman Marcus called pink one of this season's Top Trends so we can expect to see big and little girls alike strutting their stuff in cerise, fuchsia, magenta, and flamingo shades. And these powerful pink colors have a way of saying "Yes, I'm feminine but I also mean business!" So click the slideshow for some fab vintage finds that will tickle you pink!

How To Ace Your Next Interview Outfit!

    image
Anna Yu on Nov 9, 2008 10:31 AM PST
Like most people I know, getting ready for a job interview means polishing up the resume, studying the ins and outs of the industry, and perfecting that firm handshake. But the hardest thing to plan out isn't how you'll answer the questions they'll ask, but what you'll be wearing when you do! Most of the time, you don't need to run out to the department store to get an interview outfit- chances are, many essential pieces are in your closet already. For an interview with a more conservative industry, go with your trusted pant or skirt-suit, but bring in a touch of your personality with a brightly colored blouse. For more creative industries, try your hand at a belted long sleeve dress with a chic trench coat. As far as accessories go, it's best to play it safe by staying away from open-toed shoes as well as distracting and fussy jewelry. Stick to comfortable pumps or flats and an understated cuff bracelet or stud earrings. Remember that it's an interview and not a fashion show- the more comfortable you are, the more confident you'll feel, and prospective employers will see that right away! Check out my slideshow for some foolproof interview outfits that will help land your dream job.

LA Fashion Week: Nonja McKenzie's Flirty-Femme Spring Collection

    image

Local LA stylist turned designer Nonja McKenzie shined at Mercedes-Benz LA Fashion Week with her shimmering Spring '09 collection of beaded shifts, satin tops, and silk jumpsuits. Lame and chiffon butterfly-sleeve tops fluttered down the runway, followed by an array of sixties and seventies inspired dresses in soft fabrics and buttery colors. A plethora of flattering wrap dresses with flirtatious ties swinging to and fro brought a certain girlish charm to the collection, while leopard print and silk halter jumpsuits added the necessary sex appeal. Nonja revamped long-sleeved minidresses and body-conscious asymmetrical dresses with ruching down the sides of sleeves and skirts, but her beadwork stole the show with beaded shifts, billowing tops, and my personal favorite--a black and silver beaded eyelash minidress! Check out our favorite looks from Nonja McKenzie's Spring 2009 Collection in the slideshow!
