Back To The Classics: Our Top Five Designer Handbags

    image

It seems that after many seasons of excess and "it" bags, the fashion industry has come back to reality. It might be the sobering effects of the economic downturn that's making us look towards the classics. Then again, most of us could never actually afford a new designer bag each season to begin with. So instead of using your tax return on a few trendy items that will make you wonder why the heck you bought them come the next season, put your money into something that will last. Classic handbags never go out of season and look good with nearly every outfit. Yes, they may cost quite a lot of money, but these top designer bags are impeccably made and will last you nearly a lifetime. Don't believe me? I have an old Chanel purse from my grandmother to prove it. The Chanel 2.55 bag is the traditional flap bag. It was first introduced in February 1955 by the ever-practical Coco Chanel, who wanted a hands-free bag with a shoulder strap. The 2.55 comes in one size only, but it's the perfect size, small enough for evening, yet big enough to also use during the day. With its classic shape and iconic status, the Hermes Birkin bag is the holy grail of handbags. The wait list may have died down since its feature on "Sex and the City", but if you don't want to wait or pay full price, eBay and Portero.com are great places to look for them second-hand. No one can argue that the Louis Vuitton Speedy is a classic-- it has been Louis Vuitton's best selling bag since Audrey Hepburn made it popular. Get it in the black or colored Epi leather to avoid getting sick of the logo. Some newer additions to the classic bag line up are the Yves Saint Laurent Muse bag and the Bottega Veneta Intrecciato bags. The Muse was introduced in 2006 and has been a bestseller ever since. The Intrecciato bag from Bottega, otherwise known as the woven bag, is buttery soft, beautifully made, and has become an instant classic, with has a slightly lower price tag than some of the other investment bags. Give The Gift Of Hermes For The Holidays!

The first thing that comes to mind when we hear Hermes is Birkin. Or Kelly. Or waiting list. Or...Posh Spice. But there's much more to the Parisian luxury brand than virtually unattainable handbags named after beautiful actresses and genuine royalty, and with the holiday season in full swing, there's no better time to explore the world of Hermes for yourself, or for someone else. Need a gift for your mother, grandmother, or stylish-beyond-her-years friend? An Hermes silk scarf is your answer. So timeless and versatile, they can be tied on to a handbag, worn around ponytail or as a hair scarf, or looped around the neck any time of year. Hermes fragrances carry the same intrigue as their elusive accessory counterparts- they're not nearly as ubiquitous as other designer perfumes, but fall under the same price range, making them the perfect gift for the girl who won't spritz just any scent on her wrist. Hermes jewelry and watches blend classic leather with ornate styling for pieces that have signature appeal, ensuring they'll be loved for years to come, and to bring some Hermes into your home, check out Bluefly's tabletop collection. And if nothing but a Birkin will do, let us introduce you to Portero.com, where you can bid on genuine Birkin handbags- complete with heftier than hefty price tags, of course, but you already knew that. Click the slideshow for ways to give the gift of Hermes this holiday season.

5 Ways to Be Workin' the Birkin Without Breaking The Bank

Ah, the elusive Birkin bag. Because the world needed another reason to be jealous of Jane Birkin, Hermés had to create a bag in her honor, and as is the case with so many of these icon-inspired handbags, we had to have it. But with a price tag that starts at a whopping $6,000 and a wait list that's probably that many names long, the chances of getting one are about as low as our chances of seeing Posh without one (which is never).
