Back To The Classics: Our Top Five Designer Handbags

    image
Pauline Montupet on Jun 18, 2009 10:22 AM PDT
It seems that after many seasons of excess and "it" bags, the fashion industry has come back to reality. It might be the sobering effects of the economic downturn that's making us look towards the classics. Then again, most of us could never actually afford a new designer bag each season to begin with. So instead of using your tax return on a few trendy items that will make you wonder why the heck you bought them come the next season, put your money into something that will last. Classic handbags never go out of season and look good with nearly every outfit. Yes, they may cost quite a lot of money, but these top designer bags are impeccably made and will last you nearly a lifetime. Don't believe me? I have an old Chanel purse from my grandmother to prove it. The Chanel 2.55 bag is the traditional flap bag. It was first introduced in February 1955 by the ever-practical Coco Chanel, who wanted a hands-free bag with a shoulder strap. The 2.55 comes in one size only, but it's the perfect size, small enough for evening, yet big enough to also use during the day. With its classic shape and iconic status, the Hermes Birkin bag is the holy grail of handbags. The wait list may have died down since its feature on "Sex and the City", but if you don't want to wait or pay full price, eBay and Portero.com are great places to look for them second-hand. No one can argue that the Louis Vuitton Speedy is a classic-- it has been Louis Vuitton's best selling bag since Audrey Hepburn made it popular. Get it in the black or colored Epi leather to avoid getting sick of the logo. Some newer additions to the classic bag line up are the Yves Saint Laurent Muse bag and the Bottega Veneta Intrecciato bags. The Muse was introduced in 2006 and has been a bestseller ever since. The Intrecciato bag from Bottega, otherwise known as the woven bag, is buttery soft, beautifully made, and has become an instant classic, with has a slightly lower price tag than some of the other investment bags. Do You Collect Fashion? From Handbags To Shoes, We Want To Know!

These days, everyone has their vices and collections. There are weird ones like postage stamp to and salt & pepper shaker collections (I'll 'fess up, I collect any and every Kodak Brownie camera I can get my hands on). So if you can think it, I'm sure someone collects it. These days, it's easy to share your collection with the world and it's no different on YouTube with people showing everything from their makeup or concert t-shirt collections. I found a cool stop motion video featuring a guy's impressive Nike Dunks collection. Inspired by his creativity, we want to know if you have a closet full of True Religions, Birkins, or Manolos! It's not an addiction- it's a collection.

Why is it that we have no problem plunking down a small fortune for a laptop, yet when it comes to purchasing a suitable laptop bag, we hesitate? It obviously comes down to the notion of "if I have to carry it, it better look good." Sound familiar? Luckily there is such thing as a good-looking laptop bag, and to help us prove it, our friends over at ACME Made offered up a $300 gift certificate for their products, which we of course passed on to you. "Aww" is right. We asked you to tell us all about the laptop bag that you would design if you could, and choosing a winner was no easy task! Wondering who will get to splurge on a perfectly protective and sleek-looking ACME Made laptop bag, and won't even have to dip into their handbag savings to do so? Read on to see who won!

After the whole eBay lawsuit debacle, you might think twice about buying luxury goods online. But stop right there! Portero.com is the leading online marketplace for authenticated pristine & pre-owned luxury goods. Started in 2003, they saw that luxury goods need their own platform for resale online, and the idea of Portero.com was born. The site carries over 140 brands ranging from vintage collectibles to contemporary designers. Hermès Birkin bags and Manolo Blahnik sling backs to Baccarat champagne flutes-- all of the items that are auctioned off are authenticated and guaranteed 100% genuine. Unlike other online auctions, Portero.com also offers a 30 day return policy if you're not completely satisfied with your purchase. There are auctions ending every day, so go ahead and put your stimulus check towards that Chanel quilted handbag you've been dying for! Check out some of the items they're auctioning in the SLIDESHOW!

    Heavenly Hermès Hall of Fame

    image

There was a fascinating article on Hermès in the September 2007 issue of Vanity Fair which said that Hermès "does not boast, does not use celebrities in advertising, does not license its name, (and) does not let imperfect work leave the atelier." What a company! And what amazing art (I won't diminish the work by referring to it as product). Of course, if you'd like to own an iconic Kelly or Birkin bag, you could spend years on a waiting list and even then it might be outside your budget. But Hermès doesn't just create handbags. They also make jewelry and, oh, those scarves! A vintage Hermès scarf wrapped around your intelligent little head is a crown fit for a queen! Click the slide show for a little sample of some heavenly Hermès items.
