Stunning large figural decanter in deep dark green/black glass. Made by Empoli Glass, which began operations in the city of Empoli near Florence in Italy.  The beautiful green color of traditional Empoli glass is a natural byproduct of the ferrous oxide found in the sands of the local rivers that is used in the making of the glass.  This scarce decanter was made in the early 1900s to 1920s. Handblown glass with inverted, polished pontil mark on seat of body.  In excellent condition,  no problems, glass is clean as a whistle. Little feet are applied.  Cute little tail on its fat butt was not applied, hand formed with body. Stopper is solid glass, weighs just under 1 lb, hand formed, no chips.  The neck piece fits straight and snug in the decanter opening.  It can be turned in any direction.  Glass is thick and well made.  Few tiny unintentional bubbles here and there.  See images 2 & 3 below for color comparison.  This beautiful glass is a blackish green. Nice bottom-wear present, fabulous color. Gio Ponti, a major Italian designer of the time, used Empoli glass. click here to read more about Italian glass. Mid-century modernist egg-shaped Pokal. This strange and beautiful wine glass is made of blue blown crystal and sports a cover to keep unwanted elements out.  In antiquity, a covered chalice was called a 'Pokal'. Old label still attached reads 'Made in Italy' with an image of a cocktail glass. We are unable to identify the label at this time, but are certain it dates from the late 1940s to late 1950s.  Design and quality point to famous makers like Venini, Franco Pozzi, Joe Colombo, Moretti...  Click here to read more about Italian made glass. Thick crystal, varying in darkness of blue according to the thickness.  The blue color resembles that of blueberries. Handblown in four parts.  Foot is applied to the stem, stem applied to the bowl.  Lid blown separately. It's in excellent, original condition.    No chips, no cracks, no liquid residue, appears unused.  The artist left a few inclusions (small bumps within the glass, result of hand blowing).  Only one is noticeable and you can see it in image 2, center of the lid. To some it looks like an egg, to others it looks like a rocket.  Weighs 1.2 lb.  Measures 6.75' tall without the cover, 9' tall with the cover. retroartglass.com
