From The Barre To The Street: Ballet-Inspired Style

    image
Lisanne Silverman on Mar 20, 2009 1:24 PM PDT
One of my first kiddie memories is being plunked down in a sea of fidgety, tutu-clad three-year-olds, also known as toddler ballet class. I promptly wailed and broke for the studio doors (but not before demanding a gold star sticker... I didn't get dressed up for nothing). Twenty years later I can count the number of ballet classes I've taken on a single hand, but I must say there's something so inherently chic and graceful in wearing tights and ballerina flats. What's more, the typical color palette associated with ballet is to die for- dusty pinks, heather greys, nude tones, and basic blacks look their best on drapey chiffon, mesh, and lace fabrics. Try pairing a wispy pink dress with a leather jacket or killer heels to toughen up the look a bit, or try a pair of embellished flats- a studded pair should do the trick. A wrap sweater is the simplest way to add ballet-inspired style to your look and pairs wonderfully with more structured bottoms, and you definitely don't need to know your plies from your pirouettes in order to fall in love with this frilly cross-back dress by Philosophy di Alberta Ferretti. Click the slideshow for more of my favorite ballet-inspired looks, and if you want more inspiration, may I suggest Center Stage.

Clyde_Blunt seems to be drawn to great modern dress shapes, incredible colors and textures, and I guess fiercely fashionable dresses in general! I can see that her finds could very well be the future inhabitants of my entire Dream Team closet. Although any girl would love to add Proenza Schouler or Gaultier to their wardrobe, it is rare to find all types of fabulous, head-turning dresses at a variety of price ranges. But Clyde_Blunt seems to have all the bases covered, from the needs to wants and must-haves to the I-must-be-dreaming. So visit my SLIDESHOW to see all the to-die-for dresses you maybe can and can€™t afford (but looking is free!). Hey, dreams do come true!

Hive 5: Don't Step on My New Suede Shoes!

    image
    B B on Aug 15, 2008 7:57 AM PDT
Suede, which was originally used to make ladies' gloves, is now all over today's shoe market. From ankle boots to gladiators and pumps it is virtually unavoidable, and I am more than ok with that. Today I'll highlight the best suede shoes popping up in the Hive. Fall for Chloé's bootie pump with a collar overlap, strap on a gladiator ballet flat made available by Free People, sidestep the moccasin craze with a woven slouch boot by Joie, throw on a pair of DaniBlack ankle boots for a runway ready look, or go from day to night in a snap with Rachel Comey's strappy heels. To get your hands on the suede shoe craze check out the slideshow!

Peacock feathers are all over the Hive lately, and whether they're in the form of earrings or ballet flats, they are impossible to miss. Peacocks display their plumage as means of showing off while courting a mate, so why not show off like a peacock when there are so many ways to wear their feathers? To incorporate the look into your own check out Urban Outfitters feather skimmers or Ra Creations' Marykate peacock hair clip. To find out where to snag these and many other options check out my slideshow! Now get out there and show those feathers!

Hive 5: Be a Queen in the Animal Kingdom

Sure everyone loves animals, and animal print is great, but why not show off more than their skin? Instead, opt for cute animal inspired apparel- we just love their little faces. You loved it so much as a kid and now you can have a much more age appropriate (and better fitting) version! Alright, so I don't mean go out and buy a Björk swan dress lookalike, but a foxy Insight bathing suit, a quiet-as-a-mouse Marc ballet flat, or a panda dress that will hug your curves can surely enhance your outfit and not scare away small children. These cute-as-a-button animal pieces will definitely put a smile on your face, well, unless you're Cruella De Vil, of course. Stop by the SLIDESHOW to see a couple of choices from the Hive's wild kingdom.

Show Style: 10 Essential Items For Stealing That Gossip Girl Look

    image
Amelia Parry on Jul 23, 2008 9:17 AM PDT
Did you tune into Gossip Girl last season just for an hour-long fashion fix? Did you ever miss a key plot point because you were daydreaming about Blair Waldorf's latest Balenciaga handbag? Well...so were the rest of the 2.7 million viewers. Gossip Girl is more than a show about Manhattan's elite private schools; it€™s a cultural phenomenon that has had a great impact on retail trends, making preppy staples like piped blazers and argyle fashionable again. And although the television season has ended (you can watch repeats on The CW Monday nights), we€™re sure its ritzy, collegiate style will be showing up in department stores nationwide when the Back to School season begins. Now if only there was a definitive answer to: "How old is too old to wear knee-socks and a short pleated skirt?"
