From The Barre To The Street: Ballet-Inspired Style

    image

One of my first kiddie memories is being plunked down in a sea of fidgety, tutu-clad three-year-olds, also known as toddler ballet class. I promptly wailed and broke for the studio doors (but not before demanding a gold star sticker... I didn't get dressed up for nothing). Twenty years later I can count the number of ballet classes I've taken on a single hand, but I must say there's something so inherently chic and graceful in wearing tights and ballerina flats. What's more, the typical color palette associated with ballet is to die for- dusty pinks, heather greys, nude tones, and basic blacks look their best on drapey chiffon, mesh, and lace fabrics. Try pairing a wispy pink dress with a leather jacket or killer heels to toughen up the look a bit, or try a pair of embellished flats- a studded pair should do the trick. A wrap sweater is the simplest way to add ballet-inspired style to your look and pairs wonderfully with more structured bottoms, and you definitely don't need to know your plies from your pirouettes in order to fall in love with this frilly cross-back dress by Philosophy di Alberta Ferretti. Click the slideshow for more of my favorite ballet-inspired looks, and if you want more inspiration, may I suggest Center Stage.

Puma Gives Sporty Style A Modern Twist With Their New Black ...

Anyone who's anyone has had (or still has) a pair of Pumas on their shoe rack. I remember my first pair. I had orange and blue ones that I got on sale for $9.99 at Urban Outfitters way back in the day. I wore those suckers out to the sole. Now that I am older and more refined (well, at least I think I am), I seldom wear sneakers anymore. I am usually in a nice pair of Chelsea boots or my coveted Ferragamo loafers. That said, I am not the biggest fan of the whole sneaker/dress shoe hybrid-- until I spotted the kicks from Puma's Black Label. The new collection reinvents classic Puma sneakers and tweaks them with new sleek, modern design to amp up the luxury. Using fine Italian leather and infusing it with the brand's signature "roar" of fashion and function, they have revamped the recognizable criss-cross velcro Mostro design and created some new styles that include the Intreccio Mid ankle boot and the Explora ballerina flat. Check out some of the other innovative styles of the new Black Label (all available at store.puma.com).

Hive 5: Ballet Flats Take Center Stage

    image

Flats have been gracing the feet of many a stylish and sensible woman for decades (See Audrey). Heels no longer signify 'going out' or 'at the office' - flats can go anywhere, let you do anything, and can make you look as good as any heel can. (Okay, it may not have the same effect as a stiletto heel does, but did I mention you can actually walk in comfort for more than a block?) My personal favorite is the ballet flat, with a comfortable rounded toe, an elastic strap for support, a ribbon or bow here or there, and maybe some elastic ruching in the back for the perfect fit and contour. Everyone from Marc Jacobs to La Garçonne and Miu Miu have been drawing inspiration from the dance-inspired footwear. To add some drama ito your life click on the SLIDESHOW to see a few of my favorite flats.
