The Academic Model for the Prevention and Treatment of HIV/AIDS (AMPATH) is a working model of urban and rural HIV prevention and treatment services in the public sector of Kenya. AMPATH currently cares for more than 60,000 HIV infected adults and children in Western Kenya.

This exchange sparked the idea that establishing a partnership between Africa and the U.S could be a winning combination to promote the dignity of work and self-sufficiency in Africa. Our director on the ground in Africa began to search for underprivileged artisan communities, establishing relationships with the various groups, and communicating ideas and product samples to the U.S. BRIDGE FOR AFRICA’s U.S branch focuses on marketing, distribution, education and channeling feedback on product development to Africa. Through this partnership, BRIDGE FOR AFRICA has realized the incredible potential for marking a difference in African artisan communities, by harnessing the outstanding artistic talent of African artisans to create marketable products for sale in the U.S.

In the past he has used visible seams sewn together to result in both functional and decorative garments, printed huge, metallic, signature labels “Funkin Fashion Factory” on men’s pinstripe suits and turned a potpourri of hand-macramed and hand-crocheted afghans into gowns, skirts and sweaters.

  Jenny Le Roux was a Fashion Editor for a glossy magazine for 15 years. Frustrated that she could never find interesting clothes she opened her own store, Habits, in 1986, stocking her ready-to-wear label that is somewhere between chain store and couture. She uses only the best fabrics and quality is important to her. So in 2001 she bought her own factory, giving her total control over finished products. Having her own factory also gives her a short lead time to put her ideas into store quickly. The shop in Claremont, Cape Town, is bliss - huge sofa for bored husbands with all the latest glossy mags and fabulous service with anything you want to drink (don’t worry, it’s free whether you buy or not!). Her latest business venture is her online shopping www.habits.co.za. It has been up and running for 3 years and is a huge success.

Two young Woven Textile Designers from the UK, Gemma and Lyndsay, moved to South Africa to work in the textile industry. Because cheap imports have had such a significant negative impact on this industry (oh, this makes me sad!), the company which they were working for had to close. The girls, determined to use their knowledge for the benefit of South Africans, decided to start their own company. They have created products with the most original twist.
