While Anna Wintour has been at work making her magazine "recession-friendly," the international Vogue editions have been heading in an artsier direction lately with innovative collaborations and special editions all around. Now, Vogue Australia has also decided to do something a bit different. For its 50th anniversary, the magazine is putting out a commemorative issue (September 2009) featuring the work of famous fashion and celeb illustrator, David Downton. In four separate covers, Downton sketched Cate Blanchett in vintage styles that recall the days before photography. It's a great reminder of the history behind the magazine, as well as fashion's journey through the years. To read more, head on over to The Frisky!

Gotta Getaway? Stay & Play Down Under At Ravesi's Bondi Beach ...

Where can you find a vacay that combines the sand and surf of an island getaway, A-List-worthy nightlife for ultimate lounging, and all the modern luxuries that true foodies and shopaholics can't live without? Sydney, Australia, of course! Bondi Beach's hippest hotel and hot-spot, Ravesi's Hotel, is the ideal place to relax on the coast, indulge in the neighborhood's fine dining and boutiques, and explore the nearby culture with a quick cab ride to Sydney's central business district. Designed by abstract artist Dane van Bree, the hotel's guest rooms provide a modern spin on Aboriginal art and culture with its gold and metal palate and artwork, but with the getaway's gorgeous beach location, it's hard to keep yourself cooped up indoors! If the scenery isn't beautiful enough to fully tempt you, you're likely to bump elbows with local celebrities at the hotel's Drift Cocktail Lounge, which lures out locals and tourists alike. Check out the slideshow to see some photos of Ravesi's luxury accommodations -- I dare you to hold back from buying a one-way ticket straight to Sydney!

Hot In The Hive: Zip-it Necklace

    image
Anna Yu on Apr 30, 2009 6:19 AM PDT
A trend that I've noticed with considerable staying power over the last few seasons is the exposed zipper. Found on clothes, bags, and shoes, zippers have been found everywhere from Narciso Rodriguez to Alexander Wang. So it comes to no surprise when I found jewelry that's made of one of our most used fasteners. Inspired by people who talk too much, Australian design team Cynics created the Zip-it necklace which is made of a real zipper. Available in antique gold, antique silver or polished silver, you can adjust the length to hang freely or in a choker-like manner. The necklace definitely gives a versatile edge so you can wear this with your darkest and skinniest denim or with an feminine floral print dress. The next time someone can't stop talking, just point and let your zipper do all the work for you.

    Price: $60 AUD

Ever wonder what things are like down under? As if you didn't already wish you were in the land of Oz, just one look at awesome Aussie designer Maurie and Eve's collection and you'll be ready to book your next vacation. This Australian label already has a pretty sweet history, having been inspired by the love of designer Kelly Davies' grandparents, but it's seen through by the camaraderie of family, (brother Scott) and like family, Maya Clemmensen (Scott's girlfriend). The clothes are definitely a far cry from any Crocodile Dundee undertones and are the ultimate in chic fashion. Each piece calls out its own bold character, as it's beach and bohemian-driven with a bit of an 80's edge. Their lovely pieces exude a free-spirited confidence that will have you greeting your friends with "G'day" and insisting that they call you Sheila. So, calling all trendy US style-lovers -- allow us to introduce you to a down under designer that's most definitely blossoming. Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week SWIM Runway: Zimmermann

    image
Lisanne Silverman on Jul 21, 2008 2:17 PM PDT
Aussie swimwear line Zimmermann is known for its consistently sizzling collections, and the latest looks to hit the Miami runway are certainly no exception. Skimpy cuts and look-at-me colors are tempered by ruffles and floral prints, perfect for retro-loving beach bunnies and jet-setting divas alike. It's clear the days of swimwear shopping are no longer dominated by the decision between one-piece and bikini- Zimmerman's swimwear walks the line with everything from lingerie-inspired tops to mesh-covered monokinis. The cover-ups were equally stunning, in tribal prints and dressing gown-inspired silhouettes in addition to the more traditional caftans. It would be impossible not to mention the accessories- while most of us expect to be drenched in sun and sand, Zimmermann's models were drenched in chunky jewelry and layered necklaces- something I wouldn't necessarily recommend for a beach day, but for strolling around the resort- or let's be realistic, the living room- why not?
