You'll Need: 2 1/8 yards (60"-wide) cream fleece, 2 1/8 yards (60"-wide) goldenrod fleece, 15 skeins of embroidery floss in cranberry, a large-eye embroidery needle, a water-soluble marker, paper and pencil, scissors, pins, and a yardstick. DIY Your Own Michelle Obama Junya Watanabe Cardigan For $46

The spectacular Junya Watanabe asymmetric argyle cardi that Mrs. O wore over a Jason Wu dress to London's Royal Opera House has further endeared her to hardcore fashionistas everywhere. To get the look for just under $50(!), all you'll need is this adorable $33 Hurley "Bailey" cardigan in Mosaic Blue, a yard of 7/8" (20mm) turquoise-colored stretch sequin trim ($4/yard), and some acrylic paint to cover up the shiny snaps and match them to the darker blue ground of the argyle. We recommend a 2 oz. tube of Liquitex acrylic paint in Phthalo Blue and a synthetic flat bristle brush ($6 & $3 respectively). The grand total? $46. 8 Preppy Finds to Give Your Home Clean-Cut Glamour!

Preppy is getting a fresh, modern spin these days with 50s-chic home decor in bright colors and bold patterns. The quintessentially preppy pink-and-green color combo is getting a run for its money with preppy pieces in blue, red, and- my personal fave- chocolate brown. To incorporate the preppy trend into your home, look for pieces in argyle, plaid, and sharp graphic patterns. Even better, look for patterned pieces that can be monogrammed to really put your, ahem, personal stamp on the season's squeaky clean and oh-so-glam looks. Cardigans- Not Just For Grandpas!

    image
    Dino-Ray Ramos on Oct 19, 2008 4:23 PM PDT
My earliest memory of the cardigan dates back to my very first episode of Mister Rogers' Neighborhood. I remember he would pop into his living room, and change from his "street clothes" and into his "lounging clothes." Most of the time, his lounging garb included a cardigan. I thought it was so cool. The first time I ever wore a cardigan was probably in the sixth grade. It was a black and was made by the famous fashion house known as Bugle Boy. I would walk into the classroom and do my best impression of Mr. Rogers, but no one laughed and ultimately, I was entertaining myself. Today, the cardigan is a hot commodity for both males and females- but males have been devouring the trend more. Celebs like Justin Timberlake and David Beckham have rocked the layering piece that's primarily sported by retirement home hipsters. Check out this dandy cardigans suitable for the season. And P.S.- my personal fave is the Benjamin Bixby (Andre 3000's new fashion line) referee cardigan.

As If! Dress Up As 90s Teen Queen Cher Horowitz For Halloween!

Move over Queen B, Cher Horowitz is here! Put that valley girl accent to use and channel Cher from 90s hit movie "Clueless" this Halloween. With her spending sprees, computer controlled closet, and infectious personality, Cher is the ultimate example of 90s excess. The styles of "Gossip Girl" have nothing on the cast of Clueless and Cher tops them all with her coordinating outfits that are preppy but never stuffy. Take a page out of Cher's book and check out this argyle sweater dress that's great for layering or this classic beret that will have you saying "Oui! Oui!" And don't forget to hold a bundle of shopping bags in each hand for all the treats (and compliments) you'll get on Halloween night. Take a look at my SLIDESHOW to see how you can dress up as Cher faster than you can say, "Whatever!"

Hive 5: Prep School Argyle Goes Glam This Fall

There is nothing revolutionary about sporting argyle apparel come fall. After all, the vertical diamond print is virtually synonymous with prep school style. But this fall brings a new generation of argyle. Say sayonara to the subdued and hello to the brilliant. Bold and colorful diamonds are popping up on knitwear seemingly everywhere, and the result is a fun and flirty take on the classic fall pattern. Gossip Girl may have popularized the look, but you don't have to have a Park Avenue address to pull off this print! The Hive is full of colorful, preppy, and affordable (!!!) argyles just in time for fall. Check them out, and also click on my SLIDESHOW to see five of my favorite awesomely argyle pieces for fall!
