Hot In The Hive: Umbra Biblioteca Bookshelf

    image
Anna Yu on Sep 15, 2009 6:23 AM PDT
Sometimes, you never know when a serious case of design inspiration will hit you. Umbra Design Director Matt Carr is a great example of finding inspiration in an unlikely way. He found two vintage coffee tables, sawed them in half and stacked them on top of each other to make a bookshelf for his home. Luckily for us, we don't have to break out the band saw and carve through grandma's antique furniture to get the same look. (Well, you technically could, but the thought of possibly losing a limb is too terrifying). The Biblioteca Bookshelf reminds me a bit of something Salvador Dali would like. Though it is whimsical, it definitely has its uses. Now all your fashion books, guilty pleasure novels, and other knickknacks can all live in one place!

    Price: $520

The Fall/Winter 2009 Kate Moss for TopShop Collection is now available on the store's website. With the new collaboration, Moss and TopShop emphasize vintage glamour and smart, grown-up pieces. But don't worry -- there's still a rock-n-roll element to Kate Moss's collection, influenced by the best of the '60s through the '80s. Blouses and dresses in billowy chiffon are prominent, including this gorgeous Beaded Collar Swing Dress. Simple jersey tops are given a biker chick finish whether adorned with studs, beads or chain details, while eveningwear has an antique feel. Tarnished gold sequins are scattered over a maxi dress, waistcoat, and this cool Antique Sequin Bolero. Head over to Couture in the City for a run-down of some other pieces in the just-released collection!

Enjoy The Romantic Tuscan Countryside During Your Stay At ...

    image

Famed Florentine poet Dante (famous for The Divine Comedy) was exiled in the early 1300s to a little hilltop village called Gargonza. While you may not think being exiled is the best thing to happen to you, the serenity of the Tuscan countryside is worth it! If you're looking for a getaway with you and your sweetheart without the crowds and noise of other destinations, staying at Gargonza may be just right for you! You can rent an entire house for 2 people or stay in a hotel-style suite with bed and breakfast service. Enjoy the swimming pool surrounded by olive and cypress tress and discover the Tuscan countryside with fine wine, olive oils, and even shopping with antique markets and nearby brand-name outlet stores (hello Gucci!). Maybe you're planning a destination wedding? Rent the other houses (some can fit up to 10 people) and get married in the nearby church! Unlike Dante, the best part about Gargonza is that you can leave whenever you want to (though that might be hard to do). Click the slideshow to see more!

Ring in the New Year With A Radiant Vintage Ring!

    image
Mary Kincaid on Dec 26, 2008 9:16 AM PST
I know it's only the second day of Christmas, but really, is there anyone out there who wants to receive two turtle doves? I say cut to the chase and get to the real goodies- those five golden rings! Of course, when The Twelve Days of Christmas first appeared as a children's book back in the 1780s, the famous "five golden rings" are rumored to have had nothing to do with jewelry. (Some say they represented the gold rings on a pheasant's neck.) In any case, it didn't take long for men to figure out that women were way more interested in the 14-carat kind of gold wrapped in beautiful packages. In today's economic climate, however, five golden rings does seem a bit excessive, so I'll be happy to settle for just one of these fabulous finds. Click the slideshow and ring in the New Year with one of these gorgeous rings!

With the economy tanking and the cold weather upon us, you may be coming down with a case of the blues. Not to worry, though! With a few changes to your home, you can make it all cozy and comforting - and lift those stylish spirits of yours! Try adding comfy pillows and throws to your bed or couch, like colorful ones by Missoni or luxurious ones by Loro Piana. Scented candles from Diptyque can calm you down after a long day at work, while you listen to the soothing waterfall that is your beautiful new indoor wall fountain. And don't forget a cup of tea poured from a fabulous antique teapot before you sink into bed and fall asleep to the crashing waves coming from your nature sound machine. Done and done! Now check out the slideshow of my five favorite cozy home items in the Hive!

Nest Pick: Warren Hile's Slat Sofa Table

There's something about an antique-looking oak table that adds so much to a living room or bedroom. Thing is, they usually cost so much, which is no fun to find out after spending so long looking for that otherwise perfect piece! We're loving the clean lines and delicate design on this sofa table from Warren Hile's studio, but at around $1,800, it's suddenly not so ideal. Lucky for us, Stylehive makes it easy to find great deals on furniture that's just as unique. We've come up with five pieces with as much (if not more!) personality, and best of all, they each carry a price tag that's well under $1,000. Check out the slideshow and see what we have in store, and tell us which is your favorite!

What: The Warren Hile Slat Sofa Table
