Real Leather Jackets For Under $250!

    image
Lisanne Silverman on Nov 3, 2009 10:17 AM PST
Oh, the leather jacket. Never before has one piece garnered so much attention in the "save or splurge" category. You know the pros and cons of each by now, so let's jump ahead to a much more exciting debate: real vs. faux leather. Faux leather is usually easy to distinguish from real, and a faux jacket can run you anywhere from $40 at Forever 21 to almost $200 at Urban Outfitters. While there are gems to be found, my guess is you're giving up either quality fabric (not that good faux leather doesn't exist) or quality construction-- two things that can make or break your purchase. Real leather jackets, while often considerably more expensive, are generally going to be of a higher overall quality, regardless of the material, so if you plan on wearing your jacket regularly for more than one season, you may want to invest in the real deal. I've found several real leather jackets that retail for less than $250, and if you can dig up a coupon code or are brave enough to play the game known as "I'll wait 'til it goes on sale," you can snap one of these up for quite the steal. The trick is to look in places you may not normally frequent! So-called "mom brands" like Ann Taylor, Eddie Bauer, and Jones New York happen to have gorgeous leather jackets that easily rival the trend pieces you'd see in any high-end shop-- at about a third of the price. Wardrobe Jackpot: Boring Stores, Reinvented!

This recession totally sucks. But, if you ignore the unemployment rate and rising cost of beer, some good is definitely coming from it. And one of those positives is the fact that the plummeting sales of retail chains has caused them to re-evaluate their brand and reinvent themselves for fall. Suddenly stores that used to make me feel nauseous (boasting window displays stuffed with mom jeans and fugly tablecloth patterns), actually have some adorable stuff that us college girls would actually consider wearing. For the closets of fashionistas, this is great news. Now there are a dozen more stores that we can peruse online during class and drool over on our weekly treks to the mall. (Plus now when my mom calls and tells me she's going to Ann Taylor to pick up a suit jacket, I can ask her to pick me up a cute skirt to add to my care package!) Stylehive's Stylescopes Encourage You To Raid Your ...

Okay, so it's pretty apparent that the "boyfriend"-inspired trend doesn't actually look like it came from your man's closet, but you gotta admit that it's a pretty cute concept given the comfy, slightly oversized fits that are still flattering to your feminine physique. And the best part about the misnomer? You don't actually need your own ball-and-chain to cop the looks. So whether you're single or attached, the stars say you're destined to rock the boyfriend look this week, be it a blazer, a pair of shorts, or even a zip-up hoodie that fits slightly better than the one your dude left at your place. Libras can keep it casual or even go pro in a boyfriend jacket and Sagittarius ladies will stay comfy-cool in some denim shorts, for example. Just be careful not to wear too many oversized items at once -- you don't want to look like you raided your dad's closet instead! Check the slideshow to see the week's pick for your sign!

Video Style Steal: Kelly Clarkson Buttons Up, Then Lets Loose ...

If it wasn't clear enough in the previous Kelly Clarkson style steal, I'm totally loving the songstress's comeback as she rides it out, and I fully intend to soak up her rocker-chick presence in the spotlight until she goes back into hibernation and deprives me of catchy breakup therapy tunes for another long while. In the video for her first single, "My Life Would Suck Without You," Kelly showed us her softer side with a casual-cool take on her usual edgy style, and now with her second single, "I Do Not Hook Up," Kelly tackles rumors head on and proves that she doesn't need a boy on her arm to complete her outfit! One thing I've always loved about her videos is the way she tells a story through the scenes, and then never fails to break out with a belting chorus in a kick-ass outfit, rocking out with her band behind her. Makes me wish I had my own music-playing entourage to whip my hair in front of! While I'll never be Kelly Clarkson (aside from our matching and nose studs and curvy rear ends), I can at least covet the clothes she dons in the video as she causes a ruckus at an uppity lunch party, then lets loose onstage while out on the town. With a sexy fitted halter dress and studded shoes made to walk all over those misbehaving boys, it's way easier to channel Kelly's looks than it is to sing along to the video on-key! Click SEE VIDEO to watch it for yourself, then check out the slideshow to find out how you can cop her clothing!
