    Amsterdam's citizenM Is An Airport Hotel Unlike Any Other!

    Airport hotels are usually reserved for business travelers, people with long layovers, and for those stuck at the airport for other reasons. I once stayed at a totally unmemorable hotel by the Dallas Fort Worth International Airport because bad weather conditions grounded my flight. While it was cheap, I can't say I would ever stay at a airport hotel again- until now. The citizenM Hotel at the Amsterdam Schiphol Airport has totally changed my mind with its super efficient and cutting-edge design. Start by checking in via high-tech monitors in the lobby and then the prefab rooms are set to your specifications: mood lighting, music, temperature, and of course, a wake-up call! The 230 rooms may only be 150 square feet large, but the LCD televisions with free movie channels, a king-sized bed, free wifi, a high pressure rain shower and luxurious Frette linens make you feel right at home.     Amsterdam International Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2010: Ontfront

    Initially started in 2005 as a platform for young designers and artists, Ontfront didn't take long to get swept up by the fashion scene. The line found its niche in a creative and functional fusion of urban streetwear and professionalism known as Sidewalk Tailoring. Nowadays, Ontfront is a statement and huge success within the Amsterdam fashion and club scene. National and international fashion-forward celebrities like Emmy Award nominated DJ Diplo and Musiq Soulchild are dressed in some of their designs. For the Spring/Summer 2010 collection that Ontfront showed at the Amsterdam International Fashion Week, they continued to impress with the theme "Tonight is the Knight," which was evident by their brawny statures and iron gloves. The diverse collection was said to be inspired by the brave medieval knight, with the sophistication of comfortable heroism for the modern-day cavalier. With a collection of fitted tees and polos, button-down shirts and tailored suits, the designs certainly broke the mold of modern menswear with its fresh and edgy details.     Amsterdam International Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2010: Replay

    Picture a bohemian and cosmopolitan traveler who is always on the move, loves comfort but also pays great attention to detail. For the Spring/Summer 2010 season Replay's collection consists of jersey which is no longer just casual but also comes in an urban version which fits into everyday life, in all its various guises. In terms of denim, the new cuts and prefabricated waistbands give a tailored look to the silhouette, developed with super slim lines or generous flares for women - without forgetting the boyfriend fit of course - and slim/worker/anti-fit styles with treatments and finishes including super-bleach, rinse, destroyed, three-dimensional and coated for men. The T-shirt graphics are also part of the urban context and transmit clear, positive messages of peace and love using a graffiti/writing effect. The colour palette ranges from neutral shades to brights for the menswear, while the women's wear focuses on shades of mandarin, peach, papaya, passion fruit and watermelon. Studs on bikinis, leather jackets, denim jackets and dresses are being used frequently, to give this collection a rough but playful feel.     Born in Los Angeles from the socialite mind of Ava Riley and brought to Amsterdam in cooperation with Olcay Gulsen, the SuperTrash collection may exude plenty of Hollywood It-Girl glamour at heart, but it has undoubtedly adopted plenty of Dutch flavor. The label showed at this season's Amsterdam International Fashion Week in a crowded venue with former supermodel Janice Dickinson as a special guest sitting front row. The collection was split into three themes: Animal Jungle, Blossom and Kaleidoscope. The first was inspired by all imperfections of nature, such as animal prints and flowing lines, while the second theme conjured up spring-like elements- elegant, glamorous, and a little naive. Kaleidoscope was all about colors with bright tunics and caftans. Overall it was very commercial, very feminine, and a very playful display of fashion that SuperTrash pulled off well.     The Spring/Summer 2010 Lichting runway presented the best of each of the seven Dutch fashion academies including the likes of Nathanya Zwart, Erna Einarsdottir, Kai Salomon, and Bregje Cox, among many talented others. As a result, the display turned out to be one of the most spectacular and raved-about catwalk shows of this season's Amsterdam Fashion Week. The unique platform was founded to bridge the gap between Dutch fashion academies' most promising students and the professional fashion industry, and the students' work showed innovation far beyond their years. All of the collections captured of-the-moment elements found in fashion across the globe. The most impressive works were the ones that were least commercially wearable, including Ratna Ho's collection which was inspired by tribal tattoos, resulting in curvy patterns, pleated skirts and tops made of see-through materials. Bregje Cox was inspired by big city skyscrapers featuring cut-out dresses and patterns meant to imitate the look of an aerial road map. Manon Boertien used her positive memories of religion and spirituality and sunlight-reflecting crystals as inspiration, boasting bold shapes and prints.     Students of Amsterdam Fashion Institute (AMFI) showed their seventh collection for the school's label "Individuals." The young designers presented a collection called "LaLaLa," a title that perfectly described a series of fascinating pieces. Besides the prints with LaLaLa, it was a collection with a true LaLaLa attitude. Strong and soft looking outfits were mixed and included sharp looking artisan white jackets with big shoulders. Some were knee-length, looking beautifully powerful. The Margiela-esque corsets made of leather ice skates in skin tones were attached to soft shirts, or mixed with skirts creating a confident look without being too severe. The golden leggings looked like armor. All pieces were in soft colors- eggshell, nude, off-white- which gave the strong outfits an air of lightness. Sheer tops and pleated blouses covered more rigid pieces, making the outfits look less serious and more femininely whimsical. Evening dresses looked elegant, done in flowing materials. This collection proved that hard-edge fashion can be comfortable and fragile at the same time.
