Get The Beautiful, Bare-Faced Abaete Makeup Look

    image

I love going backstage before fashion shows to talk to hair stylists and makeup artists about the beauty looks they will be creating and to watch it all come together. For the Abaete Fall 2009 presentation, Beauty.com makeup artist Tina Turnbow created a very minimal, no-makeup look that had an old world masculinity meets modern day femme feel to it. The models' complexions were polished and bare with little makeup, a glossy eyelid, washed out brows, and a pale lip. I got the chance to chat with Tina, who used Tarte cosmetics, before the show to get the scoop on exactly how to re-create this soft and subtle look.

Get Blushing In A Red, Pink Or Coral Dress This Valentine's Day!

    image
Anna Yu on Feb 9, 2009 7:25 AM PST
I've found out that there's tons to prepare for if you're celebrating Valentine's Day with your sweetheart. From reserving a table at the most romantic restaurant in town well in advance to finding that perfect gift, there's a lot of stress leading up to the big day. Why not let us make your life a little easier in the wardrobe department? If you're still looking for that sexy Valentine's Day date dress, read on. One of my favorite fashion quotes comes from famed designer, Bill Blass: "When in doubt, wear red." While a bold bright red may not be right for everyone's style, I've found a wide selection in reds, pinks, and corals. Don't worry, these dresses can be worn again and again (no heart prints in sight!) without anyone wondering why you're in a Valentine's Day getup in June. Then again, I can't vouch for your Christmas sweaters or St. Patrick's Day all-green outfits. A red and white striped nautical-inspired dress is great for a casual date. Coral is one of those totally underrated colors that looks good on most skin tones. Take a look at a one-shoulder ruffle dress by Tibi for a stunning example. New York Fashion Week Trend Report: Acid Brights

    image
Lisanne Silverman on Sep 16, 2008 4:21 PM PDT
Flashing lights aren't just for the cameras, and this season was all about the candid look of acid brights- those neon tones that, when done right, transcend the dreaded day-glo look and become patches of pure spontaneity. Alexander Wang, taking a break from the blacks and greys that defined his Fall 2008 collection, opted for punchy pinks and oranges for Spring 2009, sometimes in the same outfit. Matthew Williamson paired bright jackets and pants with even brighter heels, Tadashi Shoji squeezed lime green over skirts and anoraks, and Chris Benz played up sheer neutrals with shades of yellow ranging from canary to fluorescent. If you're still not seeing neon, opt for a more subtle splash- a neon bandeau peeking out from a black or tan tank, a brighter-than-usual sandal, or for the truly faint of heart- neon nail polish. As for stares you'll get-- we're pretty sure they're looks of envy. Check out the slideshow for some of the brightest looks from New York Fashion Week.

New York Fashion Week Runway: Abaete Blends Good Girl With Bad

    image
Sabrina Newman on Sep 7, 2008 12:19 PM PDT
For the Abaete Spring 2009 collection designer Laura Poretzky really went for the wow factor giving her signature flirty-femme styles an edgy twist. While most designers look to the outside for inspiration, Laura looked inside, literally, incorporating details on the outside of a garment that usually remain hidden on the inside: boning, exposed casing, lingerie, girdles, and netting. She also examined the classic dichotomy of good girl versus bad, merging these opposing forces fabulously by giving classic feminine elements such as bows, full skirts, airy fabrics, and romantic colors a dose of naughty with corseting, boning, bondage tight jersey, peek-a-boo underpinnings, and vampy lace-up heels (part of the Abaete for Payless shoe line). The color palette was also especially beautiful with vibrant shades of tangerine and electric- blue influenced by the spirit of summers spent in the south of France - dominating throughout. As Laura put it, "the Abaete girl this season is daring, confident, and ambitious." See the SLIDESHOW of runway looks! Then check out the Hive for our members' favorite Abaete looks!

The turn of the century meets street look of Karen Walker? The classic, well-priced, "quiet revolution" of Abaete? The grunge meets sexy style of Alexander Wang?
