Goodbye Lauren Conrad, Hello Pretty Blue Dresses!

Natalie Zee Drieu on Jul 22, 2009 5:23 AM PDT
When technology breaks down like my laptop did last week, I realized I had more downtime so I could finally finish up my DVR recordings of "The Hills." As much as the show annoys me and I know it's not real, I can't stop watching -- it's my guilty pleasure! Anyway, In her "Hills" goodbye episode, Lauren Conrad wears this adorable blue Valentino dress. Although the dress itself is cute, what really caught my eye was how stunning the shade of blue is. I have a feeling we'll be seeing more of this rich, versatile color. Some of my favorite dress picks in this particular shade include the Fiumicelli Reversible Cami dress, the Loeffler Randall pocket dress, and this Laila Azhar one-shoulder dress, all available at Shopbop!

    Influential International Style: Helena Christensen

How many women of incredible fashion influence can call themselves Victoria's Secret Angels? Well, Heidi and friends had good company in Helena Christensen, the Danish beauty queen and bonafide supermodel. Her fashion credentials run much deeper, as she co-founded Nylon magazine and is its first (and only) creative director. An accomplished photographer, she's had exhibitions in galleries from The Netherlands to China. But her style? To die for, just ask Zac Posen. The woman takes risks, and it pays off. She bridges the gap between red-carpet classic and indie princess. Her looks are always daring, yet demure. She mixes funky with traditional in colors, patterns, and a deep love of sequins. Check out my slideshow for tips on how to Helena Christensen-ize your wardrobe! Photo credit: PR Photos

Vintage Fashionistas Keep It Together With Separates

    image

According to my completely unscientific poll, most fashionistas break out the vintage wear for evening. And that makes sense since anyone who follows celebrity fashion usually only gets to see their favorite stars wearing vintage on a red carpet. Who can forget Julia Roberts' stunning vintage Valentino the night she won her Oscar or Penelope Cruz accepting the award for Best Supporting Actress in a 1950s vintage Balmain masterpiece? Yes, vintage evening wear has tended to survive better through the decades than other pieces because formal affairs happen infrequently. But that doesn't mean that there aren't some plain ol' everyday vintage separates to be found. Check out this eclectic collection of tops and bottoms for vintage fashionistas. "Valentino: The Last Emperor" Hits The Silver Screen

    image

When Valentino Garavani retired from the fashion scene, a shiver went up and down the spine of the fashion industry. For the past 45 years Valentino is considered the last couturier in the world and his longevity of genius has withstood good and bad trends. Lucky for us, Matt Tyrnauer (longtime editor and writer for Vanity Fair) directed and produced, "Valentino: The Last Emperor", a documentary that gives us an intimate look at the designer's life.

The documentary has received critical acclaim at the Venice Film Festival, Toronto Film Festival and won for Best Documentary at the 2008 Chicago Film Festival-- and it is well deserved. From sketch to runway we get to see Valentino stripped down, up close and personal. We see him design. We see him laugh. We see him cry. We see him with his adorable herd of pugs. We see him argue with his business partner and companion, Giancarlo Giammetti. We see him at the pinnacle of his diva-ness. We see him as he should be seen: a human. Seeing him as an actual person rather than fashion royalty connects us more to Valentino. It not only makes him an attainable public figure, but it makes us miss him more. The title of the film says it all. He is, in fact "The Last Emperor." "Valentino: The Last Emperor" is currently playing in select theaters. Take a look at the slideshow for some sneak peeks!
