What To Pack For Your Spring Break Getaway!

    image
Anna Yu on Mar 24, 2009 1:18 PM PDT
If you're like me and shivering under blankets or still wearing sweaters and boots, now might be the best time to plan your spring break getaway. Whether you're going south of the border or perhaps the beaches of Miami, any place with sun and surf is worth going to! So you've got the location down, now it's time to plan what you're going to pack. When going on vacation, it's always tempting to try out a new style you wouldn't necessarily wear at home. However, the worst thing is to feel uncomfortable or self-conscious, during your well-deserved vacation no less! So stick to your style and stay with neutral colors you can mix and match. You can always be adventurous with the accessories you buy wherever you go, whether it's an armful of stacked bangles or a quintessential statement necklace.

Another hint: making a list of what to pack is important because it will lessen the chance of forgetting something. The last time I forgot to pack without using a list, I didn't bring socks or a toothbrush! Click read more to see my list of spring break travel essentials and check out the slideshow for more ideas. Just remember to leave extra space in your suitcase or pack an empty bag for all the goodies you'll be buying! Read on for my ten spring getaway must-haves!

From The Barre To The Street: Ballet-Inspired Style

    image

One of my first kiddie memories is being plunked down in a sea of fidgety, tutu-clad three-year-olds, also known as toddler ballet class. I promptly wailed and broke for the studio doors (but not before demanding a gold star sticker... I didn't get dressed up for nothing). Twenty years later I can count the number of ballet classes I've taken on a single hand, but I must say there's something so inherently chic and graceful in wearing tights and ballerina flats. What's more, the typical color palette associated with ballet is to die for- dusty pinks, heather greys, nude tones, and basic blacks look their best on drapey chiffon, mesh, and lace fabrics. Try pairing a wispy pink dress with a leather jacket or killer heels to toughen up the look a bit, or try a pair of embellished flats- a studded pair should do the trick. A wrap sweater is the simplest way to add ballet-inspired style to your look and pairs wonderfully with more structured bottoms, and you definitely don't need to know your plies from your pirouettes in order to fall in love with this frilly cross-back dress by Philosophy di Alberta Ferretti. Click the slideshow for more of my favorite ballet-inspired looks, and if you want more inspiration, may I suggest Center Stage.

ONE MORE WEEK! Play Stylehive's "The Hunt" And Win $500 Worth ...

Great news! We've extended our JAMES PERSE "Hunt" contest for one more week! Read on to find out how you can win!

I used to be really bad about buying black tee shirts- at one point, I counted about seven seemingly identical black tops in my closet (they were each different, I swear!), and of course, I only wore one of them- a super-soft twist-neck tank top from James Perse that I scooped up in multiple colors during a particularly good sale at Bloomingdale's. James Perse tees are more than just basics- put one on and I dare you not to buy it. Sure, they're pricier than your average tee, but think about all of the $20 tees you'll never have to buy again! Plus, JP tees hold up incredibly well and won't lose their shape if you care for them properly. Throw one on (like the tugged pocket tee) with your favorite denim and sure, you're in a tee and jeans, but you feel like so much more. Tuck the short sleeve raglan scoop tee into a mini or pencil skirt and step into a pair of heels for that effortlessly put-together look, or skip the heels and go California cool in flip flops- the wardrobe possibilities that you get with these tees are endless. We've teamed up with James Perse for this week's "The Hunt" contest, and we're giving three lucky winners the chance to each win $500 worth of JP merchandise! Entering the contest is easy- just bookmark your favorite James Perse items, and encourage others to hive your items as well by sending messages to your followers- and if your bookmark is one of the top THREE most popular at the end of the week, you win! Throughout the week you can check and see who's in the lead. Catch the full contest rules here for more information. You must be a Stylehive member to play, so click here to register for free and start hiving! The contest ends this Friday. Good luck!

Looking Hot For Cold Weather Sports!

Besides building a snowman, the best part of living in a snowy climate is being able to escape to the mountains to ski (or snowboard, if that's your bag, baby). There's nothing quite like the crisp, thin air and the explanation of windburn to your friends who think you went to a much hotter climate for the day. In addition the activity itself, winter sports also have the added benefit of really cute fashions. Ralph Lauren's Elevation Jacket and Pants could turn any fashionista into a skiier. What's more important is that this gear is truly functional and will keep you comfortable in blizzard conditions. Check out my SLIDESHOW for lots of cute skiing and snowboarding outfits!

The weather outside may be frightful (sorry, bad pun!) and the last thing you want to do is get out of bed, but that doesn't mean you can't bring a little glam into your life. Take this opportunity to chill out, relax, and take some time off of your busy schedule. Steal your favorite men's shirt from your dad or boyfriend like the long sleeve crew shirt from James Perse and slip on a pair of slim fit fleece pants. Grab a soft faux fur throw and cashmere slippers and you're ready to go! Make some hot chocolate with extra marshmallows and escape to warmer weather by reading books set in exotic locations. Or beautify yourself with some home spa treatments. Find out what to wear without looking like a total slob by checking out my slideshow!
