Style Flashback: Buffy From "Buffy The Vampire Slayer"

Alex Gambardella on Nov 2, 2009 5:23 AM PST
Goth never looked quite as good as it did on Sarah Michelle Gellar as "Buffy the Vampire Slayer." She kicked some serious butt with some serious style. Buffy rocked black and leather like nobody's business, and the sultry bad-girl look she sported on the show landed her one of the hottest vampires on the small screen (we love you, Angel). We wanted some tips on how to re-create Buffy's look, and Lemondrop's fashion expert Brian answered the call. Brian says, "Buffy was edgy without being too over the top; sexy without showing too much skin -- and that's the reason she was always so stylin'. She straddled the line between kick-ass vampire slayer and regular teenager by mixing textures and styles to create a unique, am-I-dangerous-or-not look." Click over to Lemondrop to see how you can update her iconic 90s look.

Style Flashback: Lisa Turtle From 'Saved by the Bell'

Jessie Spano was the brains and Kelly Kapowski was the beauty, but it was Lisa Turtle who had all the style. Saved by the Bell's resident style expert and gossip queen was sassy with sophisticated taste -- heck, she was even accepted into the Fashion Institute of Technology on the show's finale. But could we pull off her over-the-top look? To the rescue with some tips on making it work: our in-house fashion expert Brian. Brian says Lisa's wild style is back in a big way with graphic fit-and-flare dresses and light-wash denim jackets. Turn down the volume on her high-intensity style by sticking to tamer prints with fewer colors. Check out more of Lisa Turtle's style by clicking over to our friends at Lemondrop!

Style Flashback: Rayanne From "My So-Called Life"

Admit it, you secretly loved Rayanne Graff's quirky, nouveau-hippie threads on "My So-Called Life." She was the fun, free-spirited Laverne to misery chick Angela Chase's Shirley, and her offbeat layers (plaid shirts over tank tops) and wild, streaked hair are the epitome of grunge-era style. But how do you make Rayanne's look modern and chic? To the rescue comes our style expert Brian with some tips on updating Rayanne's quirky look. Brian says: It's true, from distressed jeans to slouchy, oversize blazers, designers are partying like it's 1994. The key to pulling of the look in 2009 is picking pieces that are vaguely reminiscent of the era without being too costume-y. You'll also want to mix them in with items that feel "now" to keep the look current. This paisley blouse by Candie's has modern feminine touches (ruffles, a smocked hem) that totally update the retro print. Plus, the rich brown color feels current. Today's version of Rayanne's tight acid-wash denim is a pair of dark rinse skinny jeans. I love this pair by McQ. Completely unadorned, they'll mix perfectly with anything in your closet. Keep your Docs for posterity's sake, but slip into a pair of slouchy ankle boots like these by Deena & Ozzy. Studded detailing on the harness strap give them a rock and roll feel. The '90s were all about mixing the formal with the casual (prom dresses with sneakers, anyone?), so top off this look with a pair of elegant drop earrings like these by Pade Vavra. Wearable Neon Makeup Shades, No Rave Required

While we've thankfully moved past that '90s flashback of fluorescent clothing and accessories, it's important to note that neons haven't been banished from the planet for good -- they've just relocated to the beauty department! I know, the idea sounds terrifying, but used with the right shades and a subtle hand, bright pops of color are an emerging makeup trend that's making feminine features stand out in a feisty, fresh and modern way. While trying to shed her goody-goody Gossip Girl stereotype and make a name for herself as her punk band's frontwoman, Taylor Momsen has been spotted flaunting neon lips and smoky eyes -- but you don't have to be a rock goddess in training to pull it off. Sticking to one feature at a time, you can go with an electric blue eyeliner to make your peepers pop, or highlight your summer tan with contrasting tangerine nails, for example. Take a look at the slideshow for some wearable neon shades!

Show Some Skin In A Chic Cutout Dress!

Remember the '90s? When models weren't just models, they were supermodels. The glamazons graced the covers of magazines and walked the red carpet just as often as the runway. They strutted their stuff in sexy body-con frocks; who could forget Cindy Crawford's strappy black mini or Elizabeth Hurley's safety-pinned skintight Versace gown? While those times may seem like a forgotten era, at least their way of dressing has come back in style. It's been hard to ignore the all the body conscious dresses out there! Ever since the return of Herve Leger, the fashion world just can't get enough. But now the snug silhouette has turned even more daring! Designers have been snipping and clipping into these dresses, giving us a whole new way to be revealing. Some designers, like Stella McCartney and Black Halo, have gone the subtle route, offering strappy, open cut outs around the shoulders. Another subtle way to rock this trend is with a cut out back, like Charlotte Ronson's exposed zipper mini dress! Or for a cheap fix try the Spring & Clifton cut out dolman tunic. Some designers have even opted to give you cut outs with out actual skin showing but replacing some areas of fabric with micro-mesh. My favorite is the Two Toned Mini Dress from American Apparel. But if you really want to embody that sex pot '90s style, you have to go all out with some daring mid drift cut outs a la Alexander Wang! See the slideshow for the cutout dresses on my wishlist.

The Crop Top: Love it or Lose it?

    image
Pauline Montupet on Jul 25, 2009 9:20 AM PDT
In the fashion world, it's "what is old is new again" all of the time. Everywhere I turn, it seems like the cropped top is one of those "new" old trends that's coming back with a vengeance! They were on the runways (Alexander Wang & Victoria Bartlett, for instance), in tons of editorials, and now it seems like the lynch pin of '90s fashion is even popping into stores! After years of t-shirts and tops getting longer and longer, are we ready to raise the shirt hemline, bare the midriff again, and show off some skin? While the trend seems sexily adorable on tall Eastern European models in the pages of Vogue, is it going to be able to translate to mere mortals? Crop tops can be a great option with high-waisted pants and skirts, as you don't have to tuck in all that excess fabric. But what happens with tighter pants? What's going to hide a woman's worst enemy... the muffin top? Just the thought of wandering the city streets with my belly bare makes me want to lock myself in my apt with my ab roller!
